Bangladesh were knocked out of the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup after their eight-wicket drubbing by defending champions India in their Super Six match at the Bayuemas Oval in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday.
Bangladeshi girls managed only 64-8 in their allotted 20 overs when the start of the play was delayed a bit due to rain. India chased that down in just 7.1 overs with eight wickets in hand.
Coming into the Super Six with two points, Bangladesh had to win against India to stay in contention for the semi-finals. On the other hand, the win ensured India’s last four berth.
Bangladesh, after putting into bat first, lost their first five wickets for just 22 runs in 9.3 overs. Jannatul Maoua (14 off 20) and captain Sumaiya Akter (21* off 29) then put up some fight, but that was not enough. There were two run outs in Bangladesh’s innings.
India lost opener G Kamalini early but Gongadi Trisha (40 off 31) ensured that they didn’t stumble in the short chase.
Bangladesh captain Sumaiya later lamented the failure of the top order.
‘The top order has been a problem for us in this entire tournament, and that is one thing we want to overcome as soon as possible,’ said Sumaiya.
‘The run-outs were very costly for the side, and it was not at all professional from the team’s perspective. India are a strong team, and they were the better side of the two today,’ added the Bangladesh captain.
Bangladesh will take on the West Indies in their last match on Tuesday at the same venue.
