WEBB, Ala. (WTVY) – Soccer is one of the most popular sports in the world.
And in order to have a shot at going pro, players often have to start young.
“I’ve been playing soccer for about seven years,” said Lucas Shoupe.
“Since I was four,” said Odin Richmond.
“For me probably about three years,” said Jonas Heersink.
Regardless of what age they start, parents have to shell out money to see their child live their dreams.
“With any travel sport there are significant financial barriers,” said Bayne Heersink, president of HSV Webb.
Until now.
“We wanted to start an organization that was a lot more accessible for soccer, for our youth,” said Heersink.
Looking to tackle obstacles, HSV Webb is cost-effective but doesn’t compromise training.
“As part of our way to break down those barriers, we’re able to provide training based on Argentinian soccer,” said Bayne Heersink.
This coaching has already paid off early, as they finished as the top team in Alabama for their league.
Parents are already noticing improvements in skills.
“Odin used to play a lot of left defender,” said Dustin Richmond, Odin’s dad. “Now he can play midfielder and striker. To be able to master all those positions at his age is a testament to the extra training they give.”
Playing pro may not be in the cards for everyone, but they are still taking away valuable lessons.
“The great thing about sports, there’s a lot of trials, fails and wins,” said Dustin. “Long term, when you experience those other challenges when you’re older, you’ll have this experience that helps you overcome it.”
HSV Webb will continue to practice this summer as it prepares for next season.
