RCB were in a great position on Thursday, April 11, against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium, having put in to bat first after losing the toss.
Rajat Patidar had just been dismissed by Gerald Coetzee for a terrific 26-ball 50, leaving RCB in a comfortable spot with 105-3 after 11.3 overs. Standing at the other end was skipper Faf du Plessis, looking in exquisite touch.

In came Glenn Maxwell, who had faced a grand total of 24 balls in the previous five innings of IPL 2024, scoring 32 runs with a highest score of 28. He had been dismissed without troubling any scorers twice.
That number went up by one against MI as he was dismissed for a four-ball duck as his miserable form in IPL 2024 continued.
RCB eventually slumped to their fifth defeat of the campaign, not large in part due to Maxwell’s failure, but surely one of the reasons why RCB have not clicked into gear so far.
Apart from Virat Kohli and Dinesh Karthik, no other RCB batsman has looked in great form. Although Du Plessis scored a half-century, it was just his first this season. That’s quite a decline from last year. The former South African captain piled on more than 700 runs in 2023.
The sort of form displayed by Maxwell is a major cause of concern for Australia, considering that the T20 World Cup is less than two months away.
In this article, The Sporting News takes a look at Glenn Maxwell’s record in IPL in World Cup years since 2019.

Ever since Maxwell had his breakout IPL season for Kings XI Punjab (now called Punjab Kings) in 2014, where he smashed 552 runs, he has scored over 300 runs in a season just four more times: in 2017 (310 runs), in 2021 (513 runs), in 2022 (301 runs) and in 2023 (400 runs).
All four seasons mentioned above preceded an ICC tournament: the Champions Trophy in 2017, the T20 World Cup in 2021 and 2022, and of course the ODI World Cup in 2023 won by Australia, which Maxwell was a part of, too.
It’s difficult to sketch a trend based on Maxi’s numbers in World Cup years. First of all, we must consider that the IPL used to be played after the T20 / ODI World Cups until 2019.
In 2019, Maxwell withdrew himself from the tournament to focus on the 50-over World Cup. Since then, there have been three World Cup years (2024 being the fourth). And, he has crossed 300 runs in each of those seasons.
