The No. 5 Texas Longhorns will play the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff semifinal on Thursday evening in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns are six-point underdogs against the Buckeyes, who have looked dominant in their first two semifinals against Tennessee and Oregon
If Texas beats Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, the Longhorns will play for a national title on Jan. 21 in Atlanta.
Although Texas has to beat OSU first, let’s take a look at the Longhorns’ championship history.

According to the NCAA, Texas has won four national titles in school history. Here are all of them, including the organization that selected national champions that year:
The 1970 season is one that is disputed. Although the Associated Press selected the undefeated Nebraska Cornhuskers as the national champion, the NFF and UPI polls were conducted before the Longhorns and Buckeyes played in their respective bowl games. The AP’s was awarded after bowl season.
Both OSU and Texas actually ended up losing their bowl games, with Texas falling to Notre Dame 24-11 in the Cotton Bowl and Ohio State losing to Stanford 27-17 at the 1970 Rose Bowl. The Cornhuskers beat LSU 17-12 in the Orange Bowl.

Texas’ last national title game came in 2005, in a BCS title game that was an absolute thriller. The Longhorns entered as undefeated Big 12 champions with star quarterback Vince Young under center. USC had Heisman-winning running back Reggie Bush and was also undefeated as Pac-12 champions.
Young led a game-winning drive with just two minutes to go in the game. He had an eight-yard rushing touchdown and kept it on a two-point conversion to give Texas a 41-38 victory.

The Longhorns have appeared in 57 bowl games throughout their history, with a 31-24-2 record. If Texas beats Ohio State on Friday, head coach Steve Sarkisian will have a 3-1 record in CFP games.
