Felix Sanchez Bas, coach of the “Tri”, said: “We know that the team we are facing is of the highest level, but they are not invincible. They have been with the same coach for a long time, they have managed to create a group and a very defined style of play, with slight nuances depending on who is in and who is out”.

He also referred to the possible penalty shootout in case of a draw, where Argentina has become strong in recent years: “The boys often stay to practice. It is true that these days they have practiced a little bit more to have confidence and, if the time comes, they will be prepared and accurate in the shootout”.
Lionel Scaloni, coach of the “Albiceleste”, spoke about Argentina’s undefeated record against Ecuador in Copa América: “No, I don’t believe. I don’t believe in statistics. In fact, I think they are there to be broken. Hopefully not on our part. They are a very well-worked team, one of the good teams in the Copa América, and before the start of the Copa I said they had a chance of being able to fight for it. I still maintain that they are a great team and the statistics are there, they are just statistics”.

Enner Valencia, forward of “La Tri”, said: “For me and my teammates this is the most important match. Taking the tournament champion and the world champion out of the Copa América would be an important boost for our morale. We are thinking about it and we know we are capable”.

He also referred to the friendly match played a month ago: “We know that we cannot repeat the friendly match we played against them. We have to be very attentive against one of the best teams in the world”.
Alexis Mac Allister, midfielder of the “Albiceleste”, said: “We do better when we play, but if we have to score, we also do it. We know that, if we play our game, we have a good chance of winning”.

He also praised Ecuador: “We are aware that Ecuador is a team that has grown a lot in recent times. They have great players, it will be a very difficult match”.
Of the 16 meetings between Ecuador and Argentina, the “Tricolor” has never won, so it hopes to reach the quarterfinals and, thus, obtain its first victory against the reigning World Cup champions. Of the total, 11 were victories for the “Albiceleste” and the other five were ties.
After missing the match against Peru due to a muscle injury in the adductor muscle of his right leg, Lionel Messi worked hard to be in top condition for this quarter-final match and will be in the starting line-up.

Enner Valencia, the goal scorer of this “Tricolor”, did not have a good performance in this Copa América, but his goal-scoring ability makes him a very dangerous weapon for the team coached by Félix Sánchez Baz. In the opening match he was sent off at the 22nd minute, so he did not have much participation in the defeat against Venezuela and returned to close the group and qualify in the last match against Mexico. His numbers with Ecuador speak for themselves as he has 41 goals, the top scorer in the history of his country, and 12 assists in 88 games played. At the local level, he did not have much playing time as he suffered a foot injury that left him out of the team, besides, in Brazil, although there is a FIFA date, the league continues so he also missed matches for that reason. However, he scored six goals and provided three assists in just 14 games played.
Lautaro Martínez, the top scorer of the “Albiceleste” and of all this edition of the Copa América, was the star of these three dates with four goals in three games played, in two of which he was a substitute. The “Toro” was not a goal scorer in the World Champion team due to his poor performance in Qatar 2022 and the difficulty to score goals. However, in these three matches he was on fire and now registers a sacred cry every 30 minutes played. His total stats are 121′ played, nine total shots and an average of 2.3 shots on goal per game. Lautaro is the second top scorer in Lionel Scaloni’s cycle with 28 goals and six assists in 61 games. In addition, he comes after an incredible season with Inter in Italy, where he was crowned Champion of Serie A and the Italian Super Cup, was the top scorer in the league with 24 goals and was chosen as the best player of the 23/24 Serie A season.
These two teams have met 40 times in total between CONMEBOL qualifiers, Copa América and friendlies, leaving the World Cup matches still vacant. Of those matches, the “Albiceleste” won 24, Ecuador won only five and they tied the remaining 11. Strictly referring to this continental competition, they met 16 times, of which 11 were for Argentina and five were ties, so Ecuador has not yet managed to win in this competition.

The last five meetings:
Argentina 1-0 Ecuador, International friendly match
Argentina 1-0 Ecuador, CONMEBOL Qualifiers
Ecuador 1-1 Argentina, CONMEBOL Qualifiers
Argentina 3-0 Ecuador, Copa America
Argentina 1-0 Ecuador, CONMEBOL Qualifiers
The “Tricolor” reached this stage with just enough, but more than deservedly for having recovered after the hard blow of the debut. In the opening match, after taking a 1-0 lead, Venezuela took advantage of Enner Valencia’s expulsion and turned it around. On the second matchday, they defeated Jamaica 3-1 to stay alive in Group B and reached the last matchday neck and neck with Mexico for second place. The result was a 0-0 draw and, on goal difference, they reached the quarterfinals. Now they will face Argentina again after the defeat in the preparation friendlies in June and will have their revenge after having been eliminated at the same stage in the Copa América 2021.

After the victory over Peru, which left them as first in Group A, the “Albiceleste” will meet Ecuador again. Argentina’s performance went from bad to better, with a complicated start against Canada, which was later settled with goals, a narrow victory over Chile with a late goal and, on the third matchday, they overcame the “Albirroja” with an outstanding performance of their goal scorer Lautaro Martinez. With this victory, the team coached by Lionel Scaloni extended to eight consecutive victories. Furthermore, so far in the Copa América they have not conceded any goals since, although they had a perfect score, they have won all their points with a clean sheet. The formation for this match has not yet been confirmed, but the main doubt is the presence of Lionel Messi, who did not play against Peru and it is not known if he will play against the “Tricolor”.

The venue for the quarterfinal match between Argentina and Ecuador will be the NRG Stadium, formerly Reliant Stadium, is an American soccer and soccer stadium in the city of Houston, United States. It was inaugurated in 2002, the total cost of its construction was 352 million dollars and its stands are air-conditioned, generating an internal climate between 20 and 23° and it has a retractable roof that, for this occasion, will remain closed. This should be taken into account considering the temperature expected in Houston at game time. Outside NRG Stadium, the heat will reach 36 degrees. On the other hand, this stadium has already been used in the current Copa America for the Mexico vs Jamaica and Colombia vs Paraguay matches.
