For their part, the Chinese national football team, coached by fellow Croatian Branko Ivanković, ranked 92nd in the FIFA rankings, have not had a good start to the third round of the Asian qualifiers, having won just one match and lost three others.
The recent win over Indonesia, plus losses to Japan, Saudi Arabia and Australia have them at the bottom of Group C with just three points and a goal difference of -9.
The Dragons will need to win this game if they are to stay alive for another World Cup. They will also be looking for their first ever win over the Bahreinese.
The Bahrain national football team coached by Croatian Dragan Talajić, ranked 76th in the FIFA rankings, have performed acceptably so far in the World Cup qualifiers, winning one game, drawing two and losing one.
The win against Australia, draws against Indonesia and Saudi Arabia, plus the loss to Japan, has them in fourth place and in a position to contest the next round of qualifiers with five points alongside Australia and Saudi Arabia.
The Dilmun Warriors will be looking for their first-ever win over the Chinese, as all four meetings have ended in draws.
Japan, qualified for the Qatar 2022 World Cup where they topped their group with six points, facing Spain, Germany and Costa Rica, and were eliminated in the Round of 16 by the Netherlands on penalties after a 1-1 draw. In the second round of the current qualifiers they finished top of Group B winning all six of their games against North Korea, Syria and Burma with 18 points.
Australia, also qualified for the previous World Cup where they qualified for the Round of 16 after finishing second in Group D with six points, facing France, Tunisia and Denmark, being eliminated in the Round of 16 by champions Argentina 2-1. In the second round of the current qualifiers they finished top of Group I winning all six of their games against Palestine, Lebanon and Bangladesh with 18 points.
Saudi Arabia, also took part in the 2022 World Cup, however they were eliminated in the group stage as bottom of their group with three points and had to face Argentina, Poland and Mexico. In the second round of the current qualifiers they finished second in Group G with 13 points against Jordan, Tajikistan and Pakistan.
Bahrain, have never participated in a World Cup in their entire history. In the second round of the current qualifiers they finished second in group H with 11 points against United Arab Emirates, Yemen and Nepal.
Indonesia, too, have never participated in any World Cup in their history. In the second round of the current qualifiers they finished second in Group F with 10 points against Iraq, Vietnam and the Philippines.
China, has only participated in one World Cup, which was in the edition held in North Korea and Japan in 2002, being eliminated in the group stage, losing all three games against Brazil, Turkey and Costa Rica. In the second round of the current qualifiers they finished second in group C with 8 points against South Korea, Thailand and Singapore.
The Bahrain vs China match will be played at the Bahrain National Stadium, located in the city of Riffa, in Bahrain. The stadium, which opened in 1982, has a capacity of 30,000 spectators.
