Mark Morris’ Anthony Roseman kicks a long free kick down the field for the Monarchs in their season opener at home against Centralia on Saturday at Longview Memorial Stadium.
Mark Morris was unable to get a toe hold on the turf at Longview Memorial, Friday night, falling 6-0 to Columbia River in 2A Greater St. Helens League boys soccer play.
Injuries have kept the Monarchs from being able to press as hard as they’d like on the pitch.
“Strong team effort versus a really good quality team in River,” Mark Morris coach Luis Garcia said. “Hopefully we can have our squad to 100% health for next week’s tough schedule. Hard to compete with teams with only 12-13 kids on the game roster and few starters playing at 50% health.”
Fidel Banuelos led the Rapids with a hat trick. All of those goals came in the first half and the Monarchs found themselves trailing 5-0 at the intermission.
Mark Morris played tighter defense in the second half but could not find a way to crack the Columbia River backline. With starting goalie Sam Allen a late scratch from the lineup due to injury, Mark Morris put the mittens on Anthony Roeman instead and he notched a dozen saves on the day.
“Another strong performance from senior goalkeeper Anthony Roseman,” Mark Morris coach Luis Garcia said. “Strong defense effort by Sam Mosier, Hayden Burck, (and) Flavio Herrera.”
Mark Morris (1-12, 1-11 league) will play at Ridgefield on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
