On Thursday 5 December, Atlantic House, in collaboration with Trium Capital, hosted a wealth manager 5-a-side football tournament with the winners taking home the coveted Hickey Villiers Cup.
Teams from 15 firms competed fiercely across three groups, with the top eight heading through to the quarter-final knockout stage. Not all were left to spectate, as the four next-best teams from the group stage went on to battle it out for the Hickey Villiers Tankard.
The firms involved were: Atlantic House, Albemarle Street Partners (ASPIM), Arbuthnot Latham, Brewin Dolphin, CAM, Canaccord, Charles Stanley, Investec, JM Finn, Lincoln Private Investment Office, Quilter Cheviot, Saltus, Evelyn, Trium Capital, and Partners Wealth Management.
It all sounds smooth sailing, but in the background, the players and organisers were also contending with the arrival of Storm Darragh. What started out as a trouble-free set-up quickly became problematic with torrential downpours and blustery winds. Far from ideal football weather.
Nevertheless, Atlantic House thought that they had everyone covered with their range of merchandise: towels. The perfect thing to keep everyone as dry and warm as possible on the sideline. However, when unpacking the boxes to hand them out pitch side they found lots of ‘awkwardly sized towels’, (more like big flannels).
Despite this tempestuous weather, the morale and high spirits of the teams and supporters were undampened. The players were eager and competitiveness was high. The supply of beers on the sideline helped.
The quarter and semi-finals were closely fought, culminating in a final between Canaccord and Charles Stanley. The match was end-to-end with only one goal separating the teams, but it was Charles Stanley who became the champions of the WM Tournament, securing the cup from past winners Brewin Dolphin (a mere five years after the last time it took place…).
Meanwhile, the fight for the Tankard ended in pain for the hosts Atlantic House, as they lost in the final against Saltus.
Once the last kick had been taken, the teams made their way over to The Strongroom Bar in Shoreditch. In typical fashion, the rain stopped as soon as they arrived.
The players then enjoyed a well-earned drink while the prizegiving took place, and the Charles Stanley team was presented with the Hickey Villiers Cup.
Overall, the tournament was a huge success and big thanks to Atlantic House and Trium Capital for organising.
There is already talk of next year’s tournament and the suggestion that it should be an annual calendar event. Next time, though, it might be scheduled for September in the hope of more clement weather.
It’s certainly the ideal opportunity for teams to be training hard throughout the summer.
