Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAGL) Football Club has narrowly escaped a FIFA transfer ban following a settlement with foreign player Dzilah Martin.
“HAGL and player Dzilah Martin have amicably resolved their dispute. The club will arrange for Martin’s visa and provide him with a plane ticket to return to his home country as soon as possible. Martin has submitted a formal request to FIFA to lift the domestic and international transfer ban imposed on HAGL,” the club announced on January 12.
While the exact terms of the settlement were not disclosed, it is likely that HAGL compensated Dzilah Martin to ensure FIFA’s sanction was revoked.
Background of the dispute
The case originated during the 2023/24 season when Dzilah Martin, who had joined HAGL, suffered a knee injury. The two parties later agreed to terminate his contract early, with the club reportedly owing Martin $20,000. However, Martin filed a complaint with FIFA, claiming he had not received the agreed payment.
HAGL was unable to provide FIFA with evidence that the $20,000 had been paid within the stipulated timeframe. Based on Martin’s complaint, FIFA ruled in his favor, ordering HAGL to pay $29,000 (approximately 733 million VND), including unpaid wages, fines, and interest for late payment.
On October 24, 2024, FIFA issued a transfer ban against HAGL, prohibiting them from registering new players domestically or internationally until the dispute was resolved.
Averted crisis
With the recent settlement, HAGL has successfully avoided further penalties, including the indefinite ban on player transfers. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to contractual obligations and maintaining clear documentation in professional football.
HAGL’s resolution of the matter allows the club to proceed with its plans for the upcoming transfer window, safeguarding its competitive future.
