It was the kind of match where players get to try different positions.
Bailey Vaughn took advantage of her switch and scored her first varsity goal when Fort Madison defeated Keokuk 10-0 in a Class 2A Region 8 quarterfinal postseason match Friday at the Baxter Sports Complex.
Keokuk ends its year with a 1-13 record and a new turf field to play on next season.
The Bloodhounds up their record to 11-3 and advance to face nemesis Burlington (13-2) Tuesday in Bracewell Stadium. Two of the FMHS losses were to BHS and the one at Burlington went to penalty kicks after two overtimes.
Teagan Snaadt and Natalie Randolph both had hat tricks for Fort Madison, but the score was just 3-0 when Vaughn blasted one in from 20 yards out that hit Keokuk keeper Relina Wong’s hands as tried to stop the ball from finding the inside of the goal.
The score was now 4-0 15 minutes into the match but no one would score for the next 20 minutes. Snaadt tallied her third goal with under 5 minutes left before intermission. She scored the first FMHS goal with just over a minute elapsed. She dribbled through the defense with some nifty footwork before her deposit into the net.
Hadley Wolfe stole the ball in the box and scored a minute later. Snaadt made it 3-0 with 27 minutes remaining.
Half of the Bloodhounds goals were assisted with Wolfe doling out a pair of helpers. Adalyn Kruse, Halle Menke and Molly Schulte had an assist each.
Randolph got her first goal off a corner kick from Menke a minute after the second half started. Wolfe scored 15 minutes later, then assisted on Randolph’s second goal with 15:45 remaining.
The match ended on the mercy rule with 14:15 on the scoreboard clock when Kara Lake netted a free kick from the top of the circle for the 10th goal.
