Madison Memorial senior Emerson Myers answers five questions and talks about some of her favorite things in an interview at Madison Memorial during the 2024 track and field season.
Madison Memorial senior Delaney Weier had a feeling beforehand that her first goal of the season was in the offing.
Weier, a St. Cloud State (Minnesota) commit, fired a shot from about 20 yards that hit the crossbar, ricocheted down, then spun into the net midway through the first half.
“I decided to loft it and see where it would take me,” said Weier, who primarily plays outside forward but sometimes lines up as a midfielder.

The goal gave Madison Memorial a 1-0 Big Eight Conference victory over Sun Prairie West last week at Mansfield Stadium.
“This was a long-awaited goal,” she said. “It definitely was overdue. I had a feeling when a bigger game showed up that I would show up, as well. I felt this one coming.”
Weier, who relishes passing to her teammates, said she was more aggressive looking to take shots and put four or five shots on goal against the Wolves.

“In practice, we have been working a lot on shooting and shooting often,” she said. “I needed to be pushed to start taking my shot and be confident. That’s what I did, and it paid off.”
In the Spartans’ 2-1 victory over Sun Prairie East earlier this week, Weier scored the first goal, which Memorial coach Cathy Patton described as “a gorgeous right-footed rocket to the far post.”
Weier began her high school career as an outside back on defense her freshman year before moving to forward. But she said she plays wherever Patton needs her, versatility she believes will help during her college soccer career.
McKay
Mount Horeb senior Anya McKay often plays center back during the club season.
Vikings coach Mark Newman sometimes plays McKay there during the high school season, and that’s where she was instrumental in a scoreless tie with Verona in the season opener. But the Nebraska commit tends to play in the midfield and have a more offensive role for Mount Horeb.
“We moved her forward some last year and a lot this year,” said Newman, adding that McKay has played “really well.”
McKay demonstrated her offensive skills and said she thought the Vikings moved the ball well earlier this week when she returned from a hip injury and scored five goals in a 12-0 victory over Portage/Poynette in Mount Horeb.
“I enjoy (playing midfield) because I get to take some more touches,” she said. “It’s good practice for technical stuff.”

All five of her goals came in the first half, the first time she scored that many goals in a half. Mount Horeb had outscored opponents 48-1 after that result (before falling to McFarland 1-0 later in the week).
“I think this is our best group yet,” McKay said.
Steel
Oregon coach Bobby Nichols is excited about Panthers freshman Kylie Steel’s potential in soccer.
“She’s going to be a special player,” Nichols said.
Steel already is making an impact. She scored four goals in an 8-0 victory at Milton, scoring the team’s first, fourth, sixth and seventh goals. Steel, who often takes corner kicks for the team, scored her second goal while taking a corner kick.
Steel scored another goal in Oregon’s 5-0 victory over Oconomowoc last week.
“(Steel) is dynamite,” said Nichols, whose team was ranked second in Division 2 in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll. “She’s got a cannon.”
Voung
Sun Prairie West junior midfielder Chloe Voung is a versatile player who helps organize the attack, take corner kicks and provide an offensive threat for the Wolves.
“When Chloe gets the ball at her feet, her teammates know she is going to make something happen,” Sun Prairie West coach Alyssa Weymier said. “She is an extremely selfless player who’s quite talented. She is able to create things and create opportunities for us.”
Voung rocketed in a shot from about 30 yards during the Wolves’ 4-0 victory over visiting Madison La Follette last week.

“It was unexpected but nice at the same time,” she said about what was her fourth goal of the season.
Voung, whose cousin, freshman Alayna Voung, scored the first goal against La Follette, particularly enjoys distributing the ball to teammates.
“As far as the corner kicks and taking the kicks for our team, that’s what I’ve been doing a lot this season,” Chloe Voung said. “I love doing it. It’s really fun. I love assisting my teammates, so they get a chance on goal.”
Weymier likes what Voung brings to the team.
“She has really showed her leadership and her ability to direct and lead the team, especially after losing 10 seniors from last year,” Weymier said. “Her teammates look to her, not only vocally but with her play.”
Paukner
Sauk Prairie senior McKayla Paukner proved to be a pivotal finisher for the Eagles in victories over McFarland, Monona Grove and Reedsburg.
“McKayla has stepped up for us in a big way during this crucial stretch of games,” Sauk Prairie coach Drew Kornish said. “Not only is she able to find the scoresheet, but she also has raised the game of those around her with her play.”
Paukner, who’s a Winona State (Minnesota) commit, had the decisive goal in Sauk Prairie’s 1-0 victory over McFarland.
Alexis Atkinson and Paukner, off an assist from McKenna Breunig, scored as the Eagles topped Monona Grove 2-1 last week.
Paukner scored twice and Ellery Apel added a goal in Sauk Prairie’s 3-0 victory against Reedsburg earlier this week.
Apel assisted on Paukner’s first goal and Atkinson assisted on Paukner’s second goal for Sauk Prairie, which was a top team in the Badger Small Conference standings and ranked 10th in Division 2 in this week’s coaches’ poll.
Congratulations to Waunakee’s Charli Smith, who received 30.5% of the vote in last week’s poll.
