Gebremedhin Haile Calls 26 Players For World Cup Qualifiers – The Reporter Ethiopia

The 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifications for African countries have been announced. The African teams have been divided into various tiers for the qualification process. As part of this, Ethiopia will play two away matches – one against Guinea-Bissau on June 6, 2016 and another against Djibouti on June 9, 2016. Ethiopia’s head coach, Gebremedhin Haile, has called up a squad of 26 players for these qualification fixtures.
Egypt, Burkina Faso, Guinea-Bissau, Ethiopia, Sierra Leone, and Djibouti are found in Group one. Ethiopia has so far drawn with Sierra Leone in their home qualifiers, but lost 3-0 against Burkina Faso, currently sit in 5th place with one point.
Egypt leads the group with 6 points. Burkina Faso and Guinea-Bissau are tied for 2nd and 3rd place with 4 points each, separated only by goal difference. Sierra Leone is in 4th place with one point and a goal difference of one less than Ethiopia.
In group one, Djibouti stands last with 0 points.
Gebremedhn Haile is the head coach for both the Ethiopian Insurance Football Club and the Ethiopian national team, a double appointment that has drawn some controversy and opposition from various parties.
Gebremedhn’s team will play against Guinea-Bissau and Djibouti in the World Cup qualifiers, with the team playing on a pitch that they have selected as their preferred home field.
The 26-member Ethiopian national team squad features three goalkeepers: Abubakr Nura from the Ethiopian Insurance club, Seid Habtamu from Adama City, and Frew Getahun from the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.
Gebremedhn has selected a defensive lineup of nine players for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifications. The list includes Berihanu Bekele from Sidama Coffee, Henock Adugna from St. George, Yared Bayeh from Bahir-Dar City, Fetuddin Jamal from the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, Million Solomon from Ethiopian Coffee, Frezer Kassa from Bahir-Dar City, Fikru Alemayehu from Adama City, Ramadan Yusuf from St. George, and Yared Kasaye from Ethiopian Coffee.
Benyam Hayton from Adama Ketema, Gatotch Panom from Fasil Ketema, Wogene Gezahgn from Ethiopian Coffee, Broock Markos from Hadiya Hossana, Abenet Demissie from Wolaita Ditcha, Abdulkarim Worku from Ethiopian Coffee, Fuad Fereja from the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, and Binyam Belay from St. George have been selected as midfield players.
The head coach of the National Team, Gebremedhn has selected six players in the forward position, including Mesfin Taffesse from Ethiopian Coffee, Habetamu Tadasse, and Cherenat Gugssa from Bahir-Dar City, Binyam Fikere from Wolaita Ditcha, Kenean Markneh, and Menyelu Wondemu from Metchal FC.
Furthermore, the Ethiopian Football Federation has announced that the Ethiopian Premier League will temporarily be suspended from Sunday, May 26, 2024, following the conclusion of the 26th week of matches, until June 11.
