The year 2024 had it all when it came to major sporting events. From the 33rd Summer Olympics in Paris, the city that hosted the world’s biggest mega event for an unprecedented third time to the European Championship and the Copa America in football. It was also a fairly busy year for cricket with the men’s and women’s T20 World Cup taking place within a couple of months of each other.

The Indian men’s cricket team, additionally faced both England and Australia in marquee five-Test series’ this year at home and away respectively – although in case of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, the final match of the series in Sydney will be getting underway on 3 January.
Though not an Olympic year, 2025 will have its fair share of sporting events. Cricket will witness the return of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy after an eight-year absence. The tournament finally got the green signal from the world governing body after months of drama following a dispute between BCCI and PCB, as a result of which the tournament that was scheduled to be hosted entirely by Pakistan will have India playing its matches in Dubai, UAE.
Also taking place next year is the ICC Women’s World Cup which will be taking place in the months of August and September, in which the hosts will be eyeing their first major global title after years of heartbreak. Then there’s the World Test Championship Final at Lord’s, the ‘Home of Cricket’, in June for which India and Australia currently are fighting it out with South Africa having already qualified for the summit clash. And lest we forget, India and England are set to face each other in a five-match Test series for the second time in as many years, this time in the latter’s home turf.
There will be special attention on the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo in September, in which Neeraj Chopra will be hoping to defend his title after suffering multiple heartbreaks in 2024 – including missing out on gold in the Paris Olympics, where rival and friend Arshad Nadeem threw further than him. Focus will also be on the Para Athletics World Championships in New Delhi after India’s record haul of 29 medals in the Paralympics in Paris in September.
Football will witness the Women’s Euro take place in the month of July in Switzerland in which England will have the rare honour of entering a tournament – either in men’s or women’s football – as the defending champions. Also taking place next year is the 21st FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Last, but not the least, there will be plenty of attention on chess star Magnus Carlsen and the Freestyle Chess Grand Tour that he is a co-founder of which will be getting underway in February in Germany. There has been some controversy in the build-up to the tournament that will have a unique format of its own and is even aiming for its own World Championship, which has not gone down well with FIDE – the Lausanne-based body that governs chess at a global level.
