Frisco City Council unanimously accepted a $95,000 grant aimed at enhancing the city's police tactical teams in preparation for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup
Frisco’s Toyota Stadium will serve as a base camp for one of the 48 teams participating in the tournament. This initiative is designed to prepare the police department’s special operations team with the skills needed to manage security for visitors and events, Officer Grant Cottingham told Local Profile.
The funding, provided by the North Central Texas Council of Governments and the Urban Areas Security Initiative, will support a year-long study and training program focused on addressing potential scenarios related to the prestigious international event, according to the city of Frisco.
The grant will primarily be used to acquire dual tube night vision equipment and to bolster the training of Frisco’s tactical response team. These enhancements are essential for ensuring effective responses to any security challenges that may arise during the festivities.
The training will involve close coordination with FIFA security to ensure that Frisco is prepared to handle the demands of hosting teams and related activities during the World Cup. As the event approaches, the city is taking proactive measures to enhance public safety and ensure a successful experience for all involved.
In addition to the police training, The city of Frisco is also bringing major renovations to the Collin County city before the big games. During a Frisco City Council work session on Nov. 7, 2023, officials discussed downtown projects including construction on Main Street and 4th Street Plaza, which is expected to be complete in April 2026. Construction on a new downtown parking garage is also slated for completion in July 2025.
In February, FIFA revealed that AT&T Stadium in Arlington will host a semi-final match during the 2026 World Cup. The announcement indicated that Arlington's stadium will feature a total of nine matches throughout the tournament, with the final match scheduled to take place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
