Defender Benjamin Pavard admits that he’s “sorry” to the Inter Milan fans after the team fell to a surprise defeat against Sassuolo.
The Frenchman spoke to InterTV, via FCInterNews, reacting to the Nerazzurri’s 1-0 defeat at the hands of the Neroverdi.
There was no shortage of Inter fans at the Mapei Stadium this evening.
The trip between Milan and Sassuolo is not an overly long one. Therefore, it is not uncommon for Nerazzurri fans to follow their team to matches in Emilia-Romagna.
And the Inter fans were hoping to see their team get a win against a side who are a true “bogey team” for the Nerazzurri.
Sassuolo had already beaten Inter in the previous meeting this season.
That is pretty much par for the course in meetings between the two teams since the Emilians came up to Serie A.
And it led to the sense that Sassuolo could get a result at their home stadium this evening, even if they are in the relegation zone, even if they were facing the dominant force in Serie A, and even if the stadium was packed with Inter supporters.
That would have made an Inter victory all the more satisfying for the fans who made the trip.
But alas, it was not to be. The Neroverdi got a surprise 1-0 win.
After the match, Pavard said that “We’re sorry for this loss.”
“As with all the matches, we always play to win.”
“But then it ended up being a loss. So we’re very sorry.”
“But now we have to move on from it.”
Pavard noted that “Sassuolo are a very organized team. They’ve beaten us twice.”
“We’re very disappointed, but we congratulate our opponents as well.”
Then on a more positive note, Pavard gave his thoughts on winning the Serie A title for the first time in his career.
“There are so many emotions,” the Frenchman said.
“It was truly incredible to have won this first title.”
“We celebrated a lot,” Pavard added. “I’m really happy.”
“I knew that the atmosphere here would be good,” he said of the Mapei Stadium. “We’re sorry we didn’t win today because there were a lot of our fans here and we wanted to make them happy.”
