The West Indies cricket team continues to work towards the right direction after recent struggles in the international circuit. The recipients of two ODI World Cups (1975 and 1979) and as many T20I World Cups (2012 and 2016) have seen the other side of the see-saw in the recent times.

Their most-recent failure came in the form of the ODI World Cup 2023. The Carribean giants’ did not feature in the tournament after failing to qualify through the World Cup Qualifiers. It was the first time ever that the two-time winners did not participate in the 50-over World Cup.
Moreover, their outing in the home edition of the recent T20I World Cup wasn’t much convincing either. The co-hosts were eliminated in the super-eight stage, failing to secure a place in the semi-finals of the competition.
To change the trajectory of recent events, Cricket West Indies (CWI) has made the decisive call of making Daren Sammy, Windies’ two-time T20I World Cup-winning skipper, the Test coach.

Former World Cup-winning skipper Daren Sammy will take the helm in the Windies dressing room from April 01, 2025. The 40-year-old already coaches the white-ball formats since 2023. The CWI decided to hand over the reigns of the Test format to the two-time WC winning skipper, replacing Andre Coley.
CWI announced Sammy as red-ball head coach during the recent quarterly press conference in St. Vincent. The Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe announced the appointment on Monday, as the Windies cricket takes another step towards betterment.
Sammy expressed his honour to help West Indies cricket in any capacity, as he takes on the Test coach role from April next year. Having been a selfless servant for years as a player, the former skipper revealed his willingness to take up the challenge of leading the Test team into the ‘new direction’.
Daren Sammy says “it’s an honour to represent the West Indies in any capacity and with the new role he has mapped out the new direction”.
Sammy adds that he is ready for the challenge to help the test team.#CWIQuarterlyUpdates

West Indies are currently placed ninth (bottom) of the World Test Championship (WTC) rankings. The North-American nation have only won two out of their 11 Tests so far in the ongoing 2023-25 cycle. With the elimination only a formality, Sammy will take over as Test coach starting from the 2025-27 WTC cycle.
