Cristiano Ronaldo, one of football’s greatest icons, has been backed by former Portugal coach Fernando Santos to play in the 2026 World Cup.
Despite approaching his 40th birthday, Ronaldo is showing no signs of slowing down, whether on the international stage or at Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
Santos, who coached Ronaldo for eight years, has no doubts about the star’s ability to remain at the top of his game.
Speaking at the Portuguese Football Federation’s 110th-anniversary celebration (as reported by O Jogo), Santos described Ronaldo as “the best player in the world, full stop.”
The former Portugal boss further said: “I always expected him to be at a high level until late and I have no doubt that he will be at the World Cup.”
He expressed confidence that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will give his all to help Portugal aim for another title in 2026.

Ronaldo’s international career has had its ups and downs. His 2022 World Cup campaign was marked by controversy when he was benched for key matches after an angry reaction to being substituted.
Portugal, despite an impressive win over Switzerland in the Round of 16, were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Morocco.
In 2024, Ronaldo faced further challenges. He scored no goals during the Euro 2024 tournament, where Portugal exited in the quarter-finals after losing to France.
However, he found form again in the UEFA Nations League group stage, contributing five goals and one assist in five matches. His performances helped Portugal secure the top spot in their group.
While Ronaldo has not officially confirmed his participation in the 2026 World Cup, fans remain hopeful.
His passion for breaking records, including the goal-scoring milestone of 1,000 career goals, suggests he has no plans to retire anytime soon.
