GREENSBORO, N.C. — A former Page High student and standout goalkeeper for the High Point University men’s soccer team died Saturday after a brief hospital stay, the team announced.
Holden Trent, 25, graduated from Page in 2018 before going on to play collegiate soccer at High Point. During his final season with the Panthers in 2022, he was a team captain and helped the program to its first-ever NCAA Tournament win and shutout.
On October 24, High Point’s men’s soccer team posted a message from Trent’s family that read the following: “Yesterday, Holden was admitted to the ICU. We ask that everyone keep Holden in your thoughts and prayers. We will continue to update everyone as we learn more.”
On Saturday, they posted this message: “We want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Holden passed away this afternoon surrounded by his family and friends … Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden.”
Trent was selected No. 28 overall by the Philadelphia Union in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft. It is unclear what caused his death at this point.
“The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Trent,” the team said in a statement. “While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better. He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé and his friends.”
