AUCKLAND, NZ (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Former UVA midfielder Joe Bell, who played in Charlottesville for three seasons (2017-2019), has been called up for duty with New Zealand for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games Men’s Soccer competition. As a Hoo, Bell scored 10 goals and notched 10 assists in 60 starts for UVA. In 2019, he was named Top Drawer Soccer’s Player of the Year, United Soccer Coaches Scholar Player of the Year, and ACC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
This will be the second time Bell has gone to the Olympics with the All-Whites. He earned four caps in the Tokyo 2020 games, playing the full 90 minutes in each game before they were knocked out in the quarterfinals.
Team New Zealand has been drawn into a difficult group in the Olympic competition, set to face Team USA, France, and Guinea in the group stage. Their first match is on July 24th against Guinea.
