NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – In this edition of FFF: A Christmas battle between football and basketball, American owners having success in English football, and a stop over at Fat Harry’s.
FOOTBALL
Christmas has traditionally been an NBA showcase day. Five games from 11:00 a.m. until late at night. It’s all the big names and teams on the main stage.
But this year, the NFL asked to cut into the “big dance”. They put back-to-back games on Netflix. The Chiefs beat up on the Steelers, clinching the 1-seed in the AFC playoffs. The second matchup, Lamar Jackson ran wild on the Texans for a Ravens win.
I watched both NFL games from almost beginning to the end. I checked in on the NBA, but the pigskin was my focus.
I had my choice, I went with the NFL, but LeBron James has his own favorite.
After his Lakers beat the Warriors, LeBron uttered “I love the NFL, but Christmas is our day.”
I gotcha LeBron. You love the league, and it’s always been the NBA’s spotlight.
But don’t give Roger Goodell any bulletin board material. Next year, he’ll schedule three games, maybe four, or just put the entire week of games on Christmas. I wouldn’t come at the NFL.
FÚTBOL
In English football there’s a pyramid system in place. It goes: Premier League, Championship, League One, League Two, and non-league football.
In most of these leagues, the bottom three clubs get relegated to the league below and the top three get promoted to a league above.
At the top of the standings in League One, there’s a lot of American owners involved with the top teams.
First place Birmingham City: Shelby Companies Limited out of America owns 45% of the club. Tom Brady owns a minority share of the club, with no voting rights.
Second place Wycombe Wanderers: Blue Ocean Partners II Limited owns 90% of the team. Rob Couhig, a New Orleans native, was the previous owner of Wycombe Wanderers.
Third place Wrexham: The Welsh club is famously owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
FOOD
Fat Harry’s has been a staple of nearly my entire college and adult life. It’s a laid back spot on St. Charles Avenue with a great bar, and a tasty food menu.
I was reminded of that last week on the menu front. The cheeseburger was on-point, the buffalo wings fantastic, and the fried pickles were an absolute treat.
There’s multiple TV’s in the bar, so you never miss any of the sports action. Also, before 7 p.m. children are allowed into Fat’s, since it’s also a restaurant.
