First 12-Team College Football Playoff Schedule Set – Pistols Firing

The 2024 college football season brings new-look conferences and an expanded way to crown a national champion.
The College Football Playoff on Wednesday released the schedule for the first 12-team playoff. The action is set to get started on Friday, Dec. 20, and a champion will be crowned in Atlanta on Monday, Jan. 20. Games will be on ABC, ESPN and TNT.

The CFP starts on a Friday night before a Saturday filled with three playoff games. All of those games will be at campus venues.
The quarterfinals then start Dec. 31 (a Tuesday) with the Fiesta Bowl at 6:30 p.m. Central on ESPN before a New Year’s Day full of action, starting with the Peach Bowl at noon on ESPN, the Rose Bowl at 4 p.m. on ESPN and the Sugar Bowl at 7:45 p.m. on ESPN.
The semifinals (where this tournament used to start), then take place Jan. 9 and 10 on ESPN, first with the Orange Bowl at 6:30 p.m. before the Cotton Bowl kicks off at 6:30 p.m. the next day. Both of those games will also be on ESPN.
That’s all leading up to the title game at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 20., another game that will be on ESPN.
The Cowboys have perhaps their best shot ever at making the CFP. Not only are the Cowboys returning most of their production from last season that led the Pokes to 10-wins, but there are also more spots up for grabs and the Big 12 is losing Oklahoma and Texas — two teams that made up five of the Big 12’s six CFP appearances.
The expanded playoff has a bit of a different requirements to get in. The field will consist of the five highest-ranked conference champions, which given the Pac-12 turning into a ghost town, would mean it would be tough for the Big 12 champ to not get in. Those conference champs will be joined by the next seven highest-ranked teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be awarded seeds 1 through 4 and receive a bye in the first round. That means if the Cowboys could win the Big 12 this year, they’d have a good shot at slotting directly into a quarterfinal.
Seeds 5 through 8 would host seeds 9 through 12 in the first round, meaning if the Pokes got an at-large bid they could host a game at Boone Pickens Stadium or head to another venue.
The long summer is just getting started, though, as the Cowboys are about three months out from opening their 2024 season. OSU starts the year with a team well-versed in winning playoff games at the FCS level. The Pokes host back-to-back FCS national champ South Dakota State on Aug. 31 in Boone Pickens Stadium.
