Shortly after defeating Thailand to secure their third ASEAN Cup (AFF Cup) championship, Vietnam’s national football team received a special congratulatory message from FIFA.
Vietnam emerged victorious with a 3-2 win at Thailand’s Rajamangala Stadium, clinching the 2024 ASEAN Cup with a 5-3 aggregate score over two legs.
FIFA’s official World Cup social media page celebrated the “Golden Star Warriors” with a heartfelt post: “Champions of Southeast Asia, champions in the hearts of all Vietnamese people!” The post was accompanied by an image of the team lifting the ASEAN Cup trophy.
Within seven hours, FIFA’s post garnered 151,000 likes, 4,800 comments, and 13,000 shares, reflecting widespread admiration and support.
Recognition for individual excellence and challenges ahead
In the comments section, FIFA also extended its encouragement to forward Nguyen Xuan Son, who suffered a severe injury during the second leg of the final.
Initial medical assessments revealed a fractured shinbone, likely sidelining Xuan Son for an extended period. The injury cast a shadow over Vietnam’s championship celebration.
Despite this setback, Xuan Son had a phenomenal tournament, contributing seven goals and two assists, earning both the Golden Boot and the Best Player awards. The Brazilian-born striker’s performance was instrumental in Vietnam’s unbeaten campaign, which included seven wins and one draw.
The Vietnamese team is set to return home on January 6, with their flight scheduled to land at Noi Bai International Airport at 2:15 PM.
