Teams participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup could call Chattanooga home for a while if the Scenic City is chosen to serve as a team base camp.
The team or teams would spend six to eight weeks for team training at the Baylor School between June and July of 2026.
Barry White, the President of the Chattanooga Tourism Company, explained that FIFA puts together a book of cities for the 48 participating World Cup teams.
Chattanooga was qualified and certified by FIFA to be one of the cities teams can pick from.
The team or teams would travel to and from their first three matches.
“If we get a team here, even just one team, anywhere between three to five million dollars is our estimate on the impact that it would have on our community. There will be some visitation with that, but a lot of that is just the international exposure that we would get,” White said.
White said the airport, hotels, local restaurants, and businesses will all benefit and see an influx of visitation.
“There will be some training camps that people will be able to go and watch and see. We think that they will have people booked from whatever country we are hosting who will travel and spend time to go see that team. Also, a chance for locals in the area to go see that team practice. Those people will hopefully be staying in our hotels overnight. If not, they are going to be day-tripping and coming to eat and experience our community and shopping in our retail stores,” White said.
With Atlanta being one of the host venues for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, White does not see why a team would not pick Chattanooga.
“The ability to their aircraft in, have a nice service it, the airport it set up perfectly for it. We are an hour and a half from Atlanta, easy bus ride, easy flight. Climate is also important and just the livability of the community and what a great community we have,” White said.
