Son Jun-ho was detained in China for 10 months ‘on suspicion of accepting bribes’ and was one of 43 people banned
The global life ban China wanted to slap on a South Korean footballer it accused of match-fixing has been rejected by Fifa, and a club official said there was “insufficient evidence” to support the punishment.
However, Choi Soon-ho, director of football at the 32-year-old’s former club Suwon FC, has said the CFA’s initial attempt to implement a global ban from football was swiftly denied, with Fifa yet to respond to the country’s second attempt. The Post has contacted Fifa for comment.
“China announced that Son Jun-ho will be permanently banned, but it is not universally accepted. Fifa has not yet made an authoritative interpretation,” Choi said.
“The Chinese Football Association announced [the ban] in September and notified Fifa 10 days later. Fifa reviewed it and sent it back because of insufficient evidence. After that, the Chinese side supplemented the content for a month and sent another official letter, but Fifa has not yet made an announcement.”
Choi signed Son, who played three of South Korea’s four matches at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, in June this year, but the club terminated the player’s contract in September after his ban by Chinese authorities.
