FIFA continued its trend of selecting new and exotic options.
In an elaborate ceremony in his home country of Switzerland, FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed the host countries for the upcoming 2030 and 2034 World Cup venues.
Like the 2026 tournament hosted by USA, Mexico, and Canada, FIFA will utilize another tri-country World Cup in 2030. However, FIFA will spread the tournament across three continents. Portugal and Spain will be the primary hosts in Europe, while Morocco in Africa and Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay will be used for additional matches. Despite competitive and logistical concerns regarding travel between the various continents, FIFA decided to move forward.
The 2034 World Cup was awarded to Saudi Arabia, a highly controversial choice. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar was met with similar issues, including human rights, infrastructure, working conditions, and a general lack of soccer culture. Upon the announcement, social media was lit ablaze with backlash, especially the typical complaint about bribery and corruption within FIFA.
