The NBA’s Dallas Mavericks and NHL’s Dallas Stars are deeper in the playoffs together than they’ve ever been. That’s since the Stars moved south from Minnesota 31 years ago. The Mavs have reached the NBA Finals, and the Stars are in the Western Conference Final against Edmonton. It’s been a busy spring at American Airlines Center. Arena workers can convert the floor from ice to hardwood in a matter of hours. Sometimes they do it for games the same day. The chase for a Dallas double comes seven months after the Texas Rangers won their first World Series.
Carson Dorsey allowed two runs, one earned, and struck out seven in 8 2/3 innings to lead host Florida State to a 7-2 victory over Stetson in the opening round of an NCAA regional. The Seminoles, the No. 8 national seed, will face the UCF-Alabama winner on Saturday. Dorsey scattered nine hits and walked only one. The junior college transfer barely missed pitching his first complete game, exiting after a single and Florida State error in the ninth. Stetson, which won the ASun Conference Tournament, got a runner to third before reliever Brennen Oxford struck out Yohann Dessureault to end the game.
The start of the women’s European Championship qualifier between Scotland and Israel was delayed after a protestor got onto the field at Hampden Park and chained himself to a goalpost. The protestor was wearing a T-shirt bearing the words “Red Card For Israel.” Policemen and other workers were seen attempting to free the protestor from the post on Friday. Players from both teams were led away from the field having been warming up. The match kicked off about 30 minutes late. It is being played without spectators after a decision was taken to refund ticket holders following intelligence over planned disruptions in protest at Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
If this does turn out to be Andy Murray’s last French Open, it ended after two matches: one loss in singles and one loss in doubles. Murray and Dan Evans were defeated by Thiago Seyboth Wild and Sebastian Baez 7-6 (6), 7-6 (3) in the first round of doubles on Friday. Murray is a three-time Grand Slam singles champion and was eliminated in the first round of singles by Stan Wawrinka in straight sets on Sunday night. The 37-year-old Murray has said he thinks he probably will retire sometime this year. He has an artificial hip and has dealt with back issues this season. He reiterated Friday that he wants to compete at the Paris Olympics.
Olympic gold medal wrestler Gable Steveson is seeking to trade the mat for the gridiron by signing a standard undrafted rookie free agent contract with the Buffalo Bills. The Bills list the 24-year-old Steveson as a defensive lineman in hopes his leverage techniques and agility can translate to football. Listed at 5-foot-11 and 266 pounds, Steveson, at 21, became the youngest freestyle wrestler to win gold as a super heavyweight at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. He went on to win two college national titles at Minnesota in 2021 and ’22, and twice was named the Dan Hodge Trophy winner as the nation’s best college wrestler.
WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert says the charter flight program still has a few expected kinks but is running smoothly. Engelbert said while it usually takes months of work to put together a charter schedule for a professional league because of plane availability and pilot staffing, the WNBA got it done in a few weeks. The commissioner said that was in large part because of a longstanding relationship with Delta and the blueprint the NBA uses. The WNBA will pay about $25 million per year for the next two years for the flights.
American gymnast Brody Malone’s long road back from a serious leg injury is over. The 23-year-old is atop the leaderboard halfway through the U.S. Championships. Malone, a two-time national champion, severely injured his right leg in the spring of 2023. He needed three surgeries to recover and only recently began training for the all-around competition. He looked as strong as ever during the first night at nationals, posting a score of 85.950 that gave him a sizable lead heading into the finals.

The last day of school has never been like this at Birmingham-Southern. The school officially closed on Friday after more than 160 years as its baseball team opened played in the Division III World Series. The Panthers have overcome obstacles in becoming one of eight teams to compete for a national championship. They open the double-elimination tournament against Salve Regina. Since the school announced in March that it’s last day would be May 31, the Panthers have gone 19-4 and advanced to the World Series last week by winning their Super Regional despite the team being overrun by a stomach virus.
Coco Gauff has moved into the fourth round at the French Open by beating Australian Open semifinalist Dayana Yastremska 6-2, 6-4. Gauff’s victory came with the help of some strong focus down the stretch on Friday after allowing a 5-2 lead in the second set dwindle so much that she was just a point from being stuck at 5-all. She chalks up her ability to stay in the moment, at least in part, to breathing exercises. Her father says she studies the greats and learns lessons from them, including late Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant. Guaff will face unseeded Elisabetta Cocciaretto for a quarterfinal berth in Paris.

President Joe Biden is hosting the Kansas City Chiefs at the White House to celebrate the NFL team’s third Super Bowl victory in five years. The entire team is expected Friday on the South Lawn. But one person whose presence is not expected is singer Taylor Swift, the girlfriend of tight end Travis Kelce. Biden will recognize the team for its come-from-behind overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers in the Super Bowl in Las Vegas in February, the team’s second straight title. Kicker Harrison Butker made headlines by assailing some of Biden’s policies during a Kansas commencement speech this month and is expected to accompany his teammates to the White House.
The Las Vegas Aces have brought former All-Star and career double-digit scorer Tiffany Hayes out of retirement. She started all 40 games for the Connecticut Sun last season. Hayes averaged 12.1 points on a team that lost in the playoff semifinals to the New York Liberty. She played her first 10 seasons for the Atlanta Dream. Hayes was an All-Star in 2017 and a first-team all-league selection in 2018. She has averaged 13.6 points in her career.
French authorities file preliminary terrorism charges against 18-year-old accused of plot targeting Olympic spectators.
The missions for both the Florida Panthers and New York Rangers couldn’t be simpler at this point in the Eastern Conference title matchup. For the Panthers, it’s win one game and return to the Stanley Cup Final. For the Rangers, it’s win one game and return home with title hopes still alive. The Prince of Wales Trophy will be in the Panthers’ building on Saturday night. Florida will play host to the Rangers in Game 6 of this East title encounter, the Panthers now up 3-2 in the series after a 3-2 win at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.
The on-ice success story for the Florida Panthers is easy to see: They’re one win away from a second consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final. The off-ice success isn’t hard to figure out, either. With an 18th sellout of the season expected for Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final on Saturday night, when the Panthers play host to the New York Rangers, Florida has already lured more fans to its rink this year than in any other in the team’s 30-season history. And the team’s ticket revenue has climbed 50% from where it was just two years ago, according to data shared with The Associated Press.
Islam Makhachev defends his UFC lightweight championship against Dustin Poirier in the main event of UFC 302 on Saturday in New Jersey. The 32-year-old Makhachev is set for his third title defense since winning the 155-pound belt in 2022. Makhachev scored consecutive wins over Alexander Volkanovski last year, part of a 13-fight win streak he takes into the Prudential Center. Makhachev boasts the longest active UFC win streak and tied for third longest in the promotion’s history. The 35-year-old Poirier has cited family, blossoming business interests, and just a general weariness of the grind as motives as to why he may retire after the fight, win or lose.
Olympic champion Katie Ledecky says faith in the anti-doping system is at an “all-time low” in the wake of the way global regulators handled a case involving Chinese swimmers. The seven-time Olympic gold medalist is looking to add to her haul this summer in Paris. In an interview with “CBS News Sunday Morning,” Ledecky expressed concern that she and many others won’t be competing on a level playing field at what could be her fourth Olympics in France.
Dallas Stars defenseman Chris Tanev will be a game-time decision for Game 5 of the Western Conference Final after taking a shot of his right foot in the previous game. Coach Pete DeBoer said at the morning skate Friday that he’s optimistic that Tanev can play later that night. Tanev got hurt in the second period of Game 4 on Wednesday night, when he was struck on the right foot on a shot by Oilers forward Evander Kane in the second period. Tanev left the ice and didn’t return to the game. Without elaborating, DeBoer says the shot caught Tanev “in a soft spot.”

Miami has promoted longtime women’s tennis coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews to the new role of director of the school’s men’s and women’s tennis programs, a move that will give her oversight of both teams while continuing to coach the women. It is the second time that Miami has moved a female coach into a role overseeing both men’s and women’s programs in an Olympic sport. The school promoted Amy Deem — then the women’s track coach — to the role of director of track and field and cross country in 2008. Deem remains in that role today, now having coached about 200 All-Americans at Miami.
Wander Franco’s administrative leave was extended through July 14 by Major League Baseball and the players’ association. Tampa Bay’s All-Star shortstop has not played since Aug. 12 while MLB continues its investigation into an alleged relationship with a minor. Administrative leave is not disciplinary under the sport’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy, and a player continues to be paid. Franco, who has a $2 million salary this year, has remained in his native Dominican Republic while authorities there investigate.
The French interior minister says security authorities have foiled a plan to attack soccer events during the Paris Olympics. Gerald Darmanin said in a statement Friday that an 18-year-old man from Chechnya was arrested on May 22 on suspicion of being behind a plan to attack soccer events that will be held in the city of Saint-Etienne, southwest of Lyon. The Paris Olympics will run from July 26-Aug. 11. Soccer matches will take place in cities across France before the final in Paris’ Stade de France.

The sisters of Nicole Brown Simpson hope a new documentary on her life will explore how she lived, and not just how she died. The documentary comes 30 years after Nicole and friend Ron Goldman were killed outside her Los Angeles home and weeks after the death of ex-husband O.J. Simpson. The Brown sisters fear that Nicole’s life has gotten lost in the chaos of Simpson’s 1995 murder trial. They remember her as a warm, quirky, vibrant sister who dreamed of being a loving wife and mother. “The Life & Murder of Nicole Brown Simpson” airs this weekend.
Coco Gauff has advanced to the fourth round of the French Open with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Australian Open semifinalist Dayana Yastremska. The No. 3-seeded Gauff pressured her opponent into committing 38 unforced errors on Court Philippe Chatrier. After several seeded players were knocked out of the tournament on Thursday, Italy’s Elisabetta Cocciaretto pulled off another upset by defeating No. 17 Liudmila Samsonova 7-6 (4), 6-2 on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Top-ranked Iga Swiatek was playing Marie Bouzkova later in the third round. In the men’s tournament, Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner and Wimbledon winner Carlos Alcaraz were both in action.
German news agency dpa reports that tennis player Alexander Zverev’s trial has started, with the Olympic champion facing allegations of allegedly causing bodily harm to a woman. Zverev is playing at the French Open and was not present for the first day of the trial. The prosecution accuses Zverev of pushing his ex-partner against a wall and choking her during an argument in Berlin in May 2020, dpa reported. Zverev has previously denied the allegations.
In a fight for the loyalty of national boxing federations, India has joined the IOC’s side in its ongoing dispute with the sport’s global governing body. India’s boxing body says it has split from the International Boxing Association and joined rival body World Boxing instead. The International Olympic Committee has cut ties with the IBA but the years-long dispute between them was ramped up this week when the IBA promised to hand out $3.1 million in prize money to fighters and their teams at the Paris Games this summer, even though it is not involved in organizing the tournament. The IOC has said countries who stay loyal to the IBA will see their boxers barred from the L.A. Olympics in 2028.
Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti may not have such a tough decision to make after all when it comes to picking a goalkeeper for the Champions League final. Much of the pre-game talk has centered around whether Ancelotti will go with Andriy Lunin — who has played for most of the season and led the team to the final — or Thibaut Courtois, the veteran who has recently returned from a long-term knee injury. Now Lunin is reportedly sick with the flu and said in a post on social media late Thursday that he won’t “be able to prepare” for the final against Borussia Dortmund. Lunin stayed in the Spanish capital while Madrid’s team traveled on Friday. The club said that he would join the team on Saturday before the game at Wembley Stadium.
After days of barreling along the huge waves of Tahiti’s island paradise, French Polynesian surfer Vahine Fierro has even more reason to look forward to this summer’s Olympics. Fierro and Italo Ferreira of Brazil won the World Surf League Championship Tour event in Teahupoʻo on Tahiti this week as surfers got a taste of the tropical venue that will host the surfing events for the Paris Olympics. While Fierro is from these parts, even she was impressed. She thanked the island for “sending me the best waves of my life.” The spectacular waves, set against a backdrop of lush green tropical mountains of French Polynesia, provided a tantalizing preview of what’s in store for both athletes and viewers when the Olympics start in July.

The Chicago Sky are enjoying the moment at a time when interest in women’s basketball and the WNBA’s ratings, attendance and revenue are soaring. They’ve won three of the six games this season heading into their Saturday matchup against Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever. It will be the first meeting as pros between Angel Reese and her old college rival. But Chicago has its sights set on bigger things. The Sky boast two highly touted rookies in Reese and Kamilla Cardoso along with a new coach after hiring Naismith Hall of Famer Teresa Weatherspoon.
Dustin Poirier won 30 MMA fights overall and has at least one more left. It’s shaping up as career-defining bout when he gets a third try at the UFC lightweight championship. Poirier fights Islam Makhachev in the main event of UFC 302 on Saturday in New Jersey. Poirier is 35 years old and admits the Makhachev could be his last one before he retires. Poirier did hold the interim UFC Lightweight Championship when he beat Max Holloway in 2019. Poirier will make an “intelligent decision” about his fight future with his family and American Top Team after the fight.
Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving just needed some time together for the Dallas Mavericks to thrive around this formed-not-so-long-ago All-Star pairing. Patience can indeed pay off in this age of instant expectation. Irving’s midseason arrival last year in a trade with Brooklyn led to a false start with the Mavericks missing the playoffs. Now they’re hitting their stride and heading to the NBA Finals for a matchup with Irving’s former team in Boston. Doncic and Irving scored 36 points apiece to lead the Mavericks to victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves that finished the Western Conference finals in just five games.
The rain just keeps coming at the French Open. It has been delaying and postponing matches, jumbling the schedule and creating stress and uncertainty for the world’s best tennis players. There were showers Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That meant the last second-round match did not get finished until nearly 1 a.m. on Friday. And there is more wet weather in the forecast for Friday. That prompted the organizers of the clay-court Grand Slam tournament to push up the start times on some courts to 10 a.m. on Friday, an hour earlier than usual.
Monaco midfielder Mohamed Camara has been given a four-game suspension by the French league after covering up an anti-homophobia message on the team’s shirt during the club’s final league game of the season. The French league’s disciplinary committee said in a statement late Thursday that it sanctioned the Mali international for his refusal to “carry out one or more actions to raise awareness of the fight against homophobia.” The French league staged its annual campaign against discrimination during the weekend’s final round with each team wearing a badge featuring the word “homophobia” crossed out. Camara taped over the badge during his team’s 4-0 win over Nantes.
