Lionel Messi might not return to Barcelona, but they will be coming to him
The United States’ influence in the world of soccer continues to grow as FIFA has ruled that LaLiga’s Real Madrid and Barcelona can play league games in Miami, Florida, with the World Cup on the horizon in 2026, and the Premier League might not be far behind.
It’s a complete turnaround in the landscape of leagues throughout each European country, since the FIFA Council has approved that from next season some games can be played beyond their borders.
Something that FIFA had previously prohibited, the soccer bosses have slowly relaxed as evidenced by the Spanish Super Cup, which has been playing outside of the European country in 2020, 2022, 2023 and 2024 as it headed to Saudi Arabia.
Giovanni Infantino and his executives have now opened the door for LaLiga or the Premier League to play matches in other countries, yet just years ago, the leaders of FIFA and Javier Tebas were at odds over this reason.
LaLiga had even scheduled a LaLiga match in Miami in the form of Barcelona and Girona, but in the face of FIFA’s threat of a sanction and the opposition of many Spanish teams, the Spanish league’s president had to concede as the rules were clear that a domestic league had to be held, at all times, within the country of origin.
However, all signs point to the fact that soon there will be a LaLiga match in Miami as Tebas fulfils his ambition.
Playing in Miami, which has the most Spanish speakers of any American city percentage-wise, is something that can become a reality once it receives the green light from FIFA and the English Premier League is also closely watching too.
The top level of British soccer is also looking at the idea of making Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and many more head abroad, but with a very ambitious plan of enjoying matches in the United States, Brazil, Indonesia or India.
