LUCEDALE, Miss. (WDAM) – The family and friends of Marcus “MJ” Daniels Jr. will say their final goodbyes at a service hosted at his high school alma mater.
Daniels was just 21 years old when he was shot and killed while sitting in his car by his Hattiesburg apartment on Tuesday, June 11.
The local community, along with Daniels’ family and friends, quickly took to social media to express their shock and grief as they struggled to figure out what happened.
Many in the community said they knew Daniels from the football field. According to his coaches, he was a standout player from George County High School who played at Ole Miss before transferring to USM in 2023.
In an obituary posted by Moments Funeral Home, his family called him “charismatic” and a devoted son with a “promising future.”
“MJ had a contagious smile that could brighten anyone’s day,” the obituary reads. “His charismatic personality was the reason there was never a dull moment in his presence.”
Daniels’ family will hold a visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, at the George County High School Gymnasium, with a funeral service to follow. His family will then lay Daniels to rest in the Merrill Cemetery.
