FIFA has announced that it awarded the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia, despite criticism from Western human rights organizations accusing the Islamic country as being hostile to women, homosexuals and free expression. The Middle Eastern nation has attempted to soften it’s stances on some of it’s cultural allowances in recent years, as it attempts to broaden it’s economy and become a bigger player on the world stage. The initiative, known as Saudi Vision 2030, has already seen the country attract major events from American entities such as UFC, WWE and more.

The post is inaccurate, however. There has been no official declaration by Saudi Arabian officials that homosexuals will be allowed to enter the country, as claimed in the X post. In fact, same-sex marriage and intercourse is currently illegal in the country. Despite this, FIFA claims that it has received “assurances” over LGBTQ fans will be “safe and welcome” at all events.
Saudi Arabia, which follows Sharia law, has not changed any laws that would allow homosexuality in it’s country as of press time. In an attempt to increase tourism, the Saudi Tourism Authority answered a question on it’s website in 2023 to state that “everyone is welcome to visit Saudi Arabia and visitors are not asked to disclose such personal details.”
