Top European soccer players are considering “refusing to take part in promotional activities for Fifa’s new Club World Cup” next year as relations between the organization and players’ unions “hit a new low.” Sources have said that players’ unions in England, France and Italy are considering “other protests around the new 32-team Club World Cup,” including “refusing to take part in promotional activities for the tournament or any sponsors.” It is “another headache around the tournament” for FIFA, which is “already facing a legal complaint in the European courts brought by Fifpro, the international players’ union, England’s PFA and the European Leagues, who claim they were not consulted over its introduction.” FIFPRO insiders believe that FIFA has responded to the legal complaint by “withdrawing co-operation over a fund for players whose clubs have gone bust and over the World XI award selected by professionals from across the globe” (London TIMES, 10/22).

The row between FIFA and FIFPRO over soccer’s “congested calendar” has caused “what appears to be a complete breakdown in cooperation between the two organisations.” There is “very little chance of FIFPro being able to stop the 2025 Club World Cup,” but the dispute between governing body and union is “getting in the way of other joint ventures” (THE ATHLETIC, 10/22).
