It’s NBA Playoff Time!
Since the UEFA European Championship debuted in 1960, only one team has been able to successfully defend its title. Spain hold that distinction as they routed Italy 4-0 in the 2012 final after squeaking past Germany 1-0 four years earlier. Italy hope to become the second nation to accomplish the feat in the UEFA Euro 2024, which begins on Friday. The tournament will take place in Germany, with the host nation kicking it off against Scotland in a Group A match at Allianz Arena in Munich.
Italy, who were one of 11 countries to host Euro 2020, won all three of their group-stage games on home soil before defeating Austria in England in the Round of 16. The Italians went on to edge Belgium in Germany in the quarterfinals and needed penalties to get past Spain in the semifinals and England in the final, with both matches taking place in London. Italy begins Euro 2024 against Albania at BVB Stadion Dortmund in a Group B showdown. The Italians are listed at +1800 to repeat as champions, while England are +350 favorites in the latest UEFA Euro 2024 odds. The top team in the FIFA rankings, France, is +400, while host Germany is +550. Portugal (+700) and Spain (+800) round out the top five Euro 2024 contenders. Before locking in any Euro 2024 futures picks or predictions, you need to see what SportsLine soccer insider Martin Green has to say.
After working in the sports betting industry for several years, Green became a professional sports writer and handicapper and has covered the game worldwide. Last year, Green was profitable in multiple areas on his soccer picks, including the Champions League (+3.05 units), FA Cup (+3.07), EFL Cup (+4.47) and Euro 2024 qualifiers (+6.30), among others. He also was solid with his Premier League picks this year, going 30-22-1 (+7.07).
Now, Green has broken down Euro 2024 from every possible angle and revealed which teams you should back and which teams you should completely avoid. You can visit SportsLine now to see his Euro 2024 picks.
Green is avoiding Germany, even though the three-time European champions are among the Euro 2024 favorites at 11-2. The Germans are tied with Spain for the most tournament titles with three, with their last coming when they defeated the Czech Republic 2-1 in extra time for the Henri Delaunay Trophy in 1996. Germany returned to the final in 2008, when they lost to Spain 1-0 and were eliminated in the semifinals in each of the next two editions of the competition before suffering a 2-0 setback against England in the Round of 16 in 2020.
Germany enter Euro 2024 in solid form, as they have won three of their four international friendly matches this year and played to a 0-0 draw against Ukraine in the other. The Germans scored two goals in each of their victories, with Kai Havertz netting two of the six tallies. The 24-year-old recorded 13 goals for Arsenal this past season, finishing three behind Bukayo Saka for the team lead.
“The Germans are playing on home soil this time around, so it is easy to see why they are among the favorites to lift the trophy,” Green told SportsLine. “However, they lack firepower on attack and could struggle against Spain or Portugal in the latter stages of the tournament.”
Green has analyzed the Euro 2024 bracket from every angle and revealed which teams to back and fade, including a longshot who has a chance to shock the world and go all the way. He’s only sharing his top picks here.
