1A No. 9 Stormin’ Pointers now 5-0 with 2-1 win over 2A No. 14 Clippers
Apr. 25, 2024 10:47 am
TIFFIN — Bend it like Bowe.
Shooting against 28 mph wind directly in her face, Center Point-Urbana junior Emily Bowe connected on two second-half goals to lead the Class 1A ninth-ranked Stormin’ Pointers (5-0) past 2A No. 14 Clear Creek Amana, 2-1, Tuesday.
“With the wind, I knew we had to shoot bombs, so the first one I just had a shot and took it,” Bowe said. “The second one, Lily Miller had an absolutely perfect pass to me, so I give her all the credit for that shot.”
Bowe’s first goal came on a magnificent shot with 33:08 left. She let it fly from deep and curved the ball just enough to float it over the outstretched arms of CCA’s keeper and into the corner of the net.
“Emily is one of those players you only see every so often,” CPU Coach Kevin Schmidt said. “The way she hits it on goal and knows her shot selection is in a good place, to be able to hit that back corner away from the goal. It’s fun to watch.”
Bowe struck again at the 8:12 mark, which added some needed insurance.
“The wind kind of pushing that ball down as it was getting toward the bar might have helped a little bit,” Schmidt said. “With no wind, who knows, it could have gone over or hit a crossbar.”
The Clippers responded with a Lena Evans score on a pretty pass from Halle Bormann, making it a one-score game with 4:54 remaining.
Evans’ goal was her team-leading 12th.
“The intensity was there, we just had to capitalize one or a couple more times,” second-year CCA Coach Rachel Carney said. “I love the energy that our players are bringing every single day.
“Hats off to CPU. They took some amazing shots, so credit to them.”
It was a hard-fought match against two teams with similar postseason visions — but very different postseason experiences.
Center Point-Urbana is aiming for its eighth girls’ state tournament berth in program history.
“We’ve just got to focus on what’s coming in front of us one game at a time,” Schmidt said. “And hopefully we’re in a great spot once those pairings come out on May 6.”
The Clippers are looking for tourney trip No. 1.
“Don’t count out CCA,” Carney said. “We’re ready to come back and to fight for our first berth in the state tournament.”
This season’s been quite the turnaround for Clear Creek Amana. After going 5-11 in 2023, the Clippers are 7-2 and second in the Wamac West.
The number of players up this year, and so is the enthusiasm.
“We were able to get up over double the size,” Carney said. “It also helps us right now that Clear Creek Amana has a history of excellence in female sports and these girls are hungry. It’s their time to shine.
“It’s not luck they’re being as successful as they are. They’re working hard and our coaches notice it every single day.”
Still on the docket for the Clippers in the regular season are matchups against ranked opponents: Independence (2A No. 6), Cedar Rapids Xavier (2A No. 10) and Iowa City Liberty (2A No. 11).
For CPU, its biggest upcoming challenges will come against 1A No. 14 Vinton-Shellsburg, 2A No. 2 Waverly-Shell Rock and Independence.
