ENID, Okla. — Enid’s girls and boys broke out of their slumps Friday by sweeping arch-rival Ponca City (5-1 girls and 5-0 boys) to take the 412 traveling trophy on the team’s homecoming at the Advance Soccer Complex.
Both Enid teams are now 1-2 in district and 6-4 overall. They both got the maximum tiebreaker points (up to four) with the victories.
“Anytime you beat an arch-rival it’s a good feeling,” said Plainsmen coach Jorge Cabada. “We’re still not content where we are. We still have a lot of things we need to fix … but at the end of the day it’s about the results and no matter how you do it, it’s all about getting that W.”
Captain Jonathan Gomez scored twice in the second half as part of a four-goal Enid surge. He scored with 36:25 remaining in the second half to make it 2-0 and scored with 14.1 seconds left for the final 5-0 margin.
Sebastian Casillas scored with 35:17 left and Alex Chavez, with an assist from Gomez, scored the all-important fourth goal with 3:39 remaining.
Edwin Loza scored 1:48 into the game for the first goal.
Enid dominated time of possession throughout the game.
The Plainsmen had gone from a 5-3-2 to a 3-4-3 format Friday.
“We were more of an attack-minded [set] because we wanted the four-goal max that we’re allowed for tiebreakers,” Cabada said. “We performed well. We had a few nicks here and there, but I think everybody will be all right with rest.”
Ava Burnett scored four goals in the girls game — three in the first half (39:00, 7:13 and 3:45) and one in the second half (3:45). Her first goal came after Lauren Jackson had made it 1-0 just 45 seconds into the game.
“Before every game we make it a point to start strong and set the tone early,” said Enid coach Tim Lavoie. “We did that. By scoring those early goals, it allows you the confidence to continue to compete and put more in the back of the net.”
Burnett was especially pleased since she was in a scoring slump. She now has seven goals for the season.
“It feels good,” Burnett said. “The girls came together, Playing our rival, we wanted to make sure that we are out as one and that’s what we did. We worked hard all the way through the game. Those early goals helped push us to win and score more goals. My confidence always builds up after every game, but all those goals helps build my confidence more.”
Ponca City scored its lone goal with 6:14 remaining.
The Pacers and Plainsmen will travel to another arch-rival, Stillwater, on Tuesday.
