Although the Summit High School girls soccer team will most likely not make the 32-team Class 4A state soccer playoffs, the Tigers are still eager to record as many wins as possible in Mackenzie Meade’s first year as head coach.
With five wins so far this season, Summit attempted to gain another dash in the win column on Thursday, May 2, in Breckenridge against Eagle Valley High School.
Serving as the team’s second to last game of the season, Summit began the match on the defense as Eagle Valley searched for an early goal.
After losing to the Eagle Valley Devils, 4-1, back in March, Summit tried to utilize the home crowd to flip the field, but Eagle Valley put a goal past Summit sophomore goalie Rowan Connelly less than three minutes into the game.
Following the goal from the Devils, the Tigers played with more urgency and soon were able to set up their offense. Senior Ella Snyder fed a pass across the field to an open teammate, but after putting the ball past the Eagle Valley goalie, the shot was waived off for a Summit penalty.
Despite failing to score, the chance further energized the Tigers, leading to other scoring opportunities.
Eagle Valley defended its net before reestablishing possession in its offensive zone. In a span of a couple minutes, the Devils fired off several shots, but Connelly, junior Delilah Staberg and junior Olivia Lyman kept the ball wide of the goal.

With around 15 minutes left in the opening half, Summit truly frustrated Eagle Valley for the first of the game. Sophomore Jaime Yim Nadler and sophomore Penelope Wiethake cut deep into the offensive zone, sending the Devils’ defense into a frenzy while in pursuit of stopping the ball.
After weathering the chances from Summit, Eagle Valley flew down the pitch where the team scored two goals in a matter of minutes. The first goal came from a lofty free kick while the latter was scored off of a Summit defensive breakdown.
Summit trailed 3-0 heading into the second half.
Needing to cut into the deficit quickly, Summit played vigorously in the first 10 minutes of the new half. Summit fought through the Eagle Valley defense to put chances on the doorstep of the goal, but the shots continued to be stopped by the Devils.
Once Eagle Valley settled down the pace of play, the team distributed the ball across the field. The Devils saw a few chances to score a fourth goal, but the Tigers soon repossessed the ball and returned to pushing for a goal of its own.
After 57 minutes of play, Summit’s persistence paid off with a Wiethake goal. It came after she chased down the ball and got back up after crashing into the Eagle Valley goalie.
Trailing 3-1 with under 20 minutes remaining, Summit continued to apply pressure in the offensive zone. Snyder and the rest of the Tigers squad rocketed off shots, but they failed to score.
In the final 15 minutes of the game, the Devils dominated possession of the ball while in search for a game-sealing goal. Summit successfully defended the final scoring chances from Eagle Valley, but the team ultimately fell 3-1.
“At half we just all communicated about what we needed to do to get better — really come out stronger so that we could win the ball first and get better touches on the ball,” Wiethake said. “We ended up getting our goal. I feel like our communication got better, and we were taking more time with the ball instead of just kicking it.”
With the loss, Summit falls to 5-9 overall and 2-7 in league play.
Summit will play its final game of the regular season on Saturday, May 4, against Palisade High School in Breckenridge.
“We will definitely work on all the things that didn’t allow us to win the game today,” Wiethake said. “I feel like something that we lack on is shooting the ball because we always take too many touches. I think we will work on shots and coming out as strong as we did in the second half as well.”
The game is scheduled for 11 a.m. In the first meeting between the two teams, Summit fell to Palisade, 5-0.
