Former Super Eagles forward Chukwu Ndukwe has called on the leadership of the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF to focus their efforts on the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, emphasizing that while Nigeria’s path is difficult, it is still achievable.
Nigeria ended the previous year on a positive note, clinching a silver medal at the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire and securing qualification for the 2025 AFCON.
However, the spotlight now shifts to the more challenging task of reclaiming ground in the World Cup qualifiers, which resume in March.
The Super Eagles currently sit in fifth place in their qualification group with just three points. South Africa, Rwanda, and Benin Republic are tied at the top with seven points each, while Lesotho occupies fourth place with five points.
The situation leaves Nigeria with a mountain to climb if they are to secure a spot in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking to Brila.net Ndukwe stressed the need for the NFF to address all critical issues and provide the necessary support to the technical crew, led by interim coach Augustine Eguavoen.
“Our priority should be qualifying for the World Cup, and for that, we need stability in the team,” Ndukwe stated.
“Sometimes the coach needs time to understand the squad’s depth, experiment with players, and build a solid team.
I think Eguavoen and his technical crew should continue instead of bringing in a new coach and starting afresh.”
With six matchdays left, optimistic Nigerian football fans still believe that all hope is not lost. Winning all the remaining matches could propel the Super Eagles back into contention for a World Cup ticket.
As the countdown to the qualifiers begins, the NFF faces mounting pressure to ensure that the Super Eagles are adequately prepared to deliver the results that millions of Nigerians are hoping for.
