JAKARTA – Coach Didier Deschamps will leave the French national team after the 2026 World Cup. He will not renew his contract even though he brought France through to the finals and even returned to world champions.
Deschamps set the record for the longest French coach to replace his colleague Laurent Blanc in 2012. He then brought France to the Euro 2016 final. Failed in the European Cup, Deschamps finally succeeded in leading Le Bleus to win the 2018 World Cup after beating Croatia 4-2 in the final.
He was also one of three figures who had brought the national team to become world champions as a player and coach. Deschamps equaled the achievements of two world legends, Franz Beckenbauer (at that time still West Germany) and Mario Zagallo (Brazil).
However, France failed at Euro 2020. In fact, they have been eliminated in the round of 16. However, France managed to get up and win the 2021 UEFA Nations League and again reached the final at the 2022 World Cup even though they finally lost against Argentina on penalties.
After the Qatar World Cup, the French Football Federation (FFF) is reportedly not going to extend Deschamps’ contract. At that time Zinedine Zidane, who is also Deschamps’ colleague and is still unemployed after leaving Real Madrid, is said to be the national team coach.
However, the rumors were dashed because FFF chose to defend Deschamps. However, the federation’s decision was criticized because Deschamps considered it was time to no longer handle France. The federation remains in its decision.
Only the 56-year-old coach finally failed again at Euro 2024. France lasted until the semifinals before being eliminated by Spain who became European champions. Deschamps is maintained and is now expected to pass Kylian Mbappe et al to the 2026 World Cup finals which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Deschamps himself stated that he would resign after the World Cup, whether France qualified or not to the finals. France’s leading sports daily L’Equipe said that Deschamps would no longer handle the national team.
Meanwhile, FFF President Philippe Diallo, as quoted by RTE, said Deschamps would not continue to deal with France after the World Cup.
“He will complete his contract, until 2026,” said Diallo.
With the resignation of Deschamps, who replaced him is still a puzzle. FFF did not immediately announce Deschamps’ successor even though Zidane’s name was sticking out again. Former national team player Christophe Dugarry said Zidane was a strong favorite to deal with France.
“It could be the right decision. I have no interest in anything, including with Zidane. But we really hope he [who becomes the national team coach] after [World Cup] 2026,” said Dugarry who is Deschamps and Zidane’s partner in the national team.
“But the decision remains with him. Only this is fully my personal opinion. But in this bottom of my heart, I have long hoped that one day he [Zidane] will handle it. I hope this can be realized after 2026,” he said.
Deschamps, who has always won trophies at every club he has strengthened, also brought France to a double title. The player who occupied the midfielder defended and earned the nickname ‘waterlifter’ by former French player Eric Cantona won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000.
