A new soccer complex is one step closer to becoming a reality in Des Moines.
The Polk County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday morning to increase the county’s contribution to the proposed project at the former Dico site by $10 million. The decision comes after the Iowa Economic Development Board voted to award $23.5 million to the Capital City Reinvestment District on Friday.
In addition to the soccer stadium, there will be a global plaza, a hotel, a convenience store, an entertainment venue and housing.
Supervisors were waiting to vote on the county’s contribution until the decision came down from IEDA. Supervisors Tom Hockensmith and Matt McCoy both voted against the measure.
The stadium has been a long time in the making. It was initially projected to open in 2022. Construction is now expected to begin next year.
The stadium will be located near 15th Street and MLK Jr. Parkway.
Dan Jansen, the program manager for the Iowa Soccer Development Foundation (ISDF) tells KCCI the foundation continues to work on closing the remaining $19.85 million gap in the capital stack.
