The world’s oldest national soccer team tournament is being played entirely in the United States this year
Kansas City is once again in the international soccer spotlight as it prepares to host the first of two matches of the CONMEBOL Copa America tournament early Tuesday evening.
Copa America, the world’s oldest national soccer team tournament, is being played entirely in the United States this year.
One match of the 16-team tournament is scheduled at Children’s Mercy Park tonight and another at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium next week.
The United States men’s national team played its first tournament match last Sunday in Dallas, defeating Bolivia 2-0.
Traditionally, Copa America is the national team championship for South America. However, this year, six teams from North and Central America are also participating.
Tonight, the national teams of Peru and Canada will kick off at 5 p.m. at Children’s Mercy Park. The USMNT will play against Uruguay at GEHA Field at Arrowhead on July 1, kicking off at 8 p.m.
This is a massive event in the world of soccer. Kansas City’s selection to host two matches is no coincidence.
It comes two years ahead of the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
“We’ve had a great relationship with FIFA through that bidding effort to host the World Cup,” Sporting Kansas City director of communications Kurt Austin told KMBC on Monday. “Through some of those relationships, it opens up the opportunities, such as this one, to host Copa America matches as well.”
Sporting KC and the Kansas City Chiefs collaborated in bidding for the Copa America matches. This move speaks volumes about the growth of soccer in the Kansas City region.
Tickets are still available online for both matches.
