Jordan Blake Ramey, 22, a Brevard College football player, was shot early Wednesday in downtown Hickory, officials said.
Police officers were called to the area of Second Street NW and Main Avenue NW shortly after 2 a.m. where they found Ramey, of Yadkinville, who had been shot.
Paramedics took Ramey to Frye Regional Medical Center and he was later transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston Salem.
He is in stable condition.

Javier Hampton Trevino Jr., of Lenoir, is facing two attempted first-degree murder charges, police said.
Police said Trevino was involved in an incident with another group nearby when he fired shots striking Ramey.
Ramey didn’t know the suspect and wasn’t involved in the initial incident, Hickory police said.
Trevino was arrested on Thursday.
In addition to the attempted murder charges, Trevino was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Patsy Elaine Humphries, Lenoir, has also been arrested in connection with this case.
Police said Humphries was charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill or inflict serious injury.
Humphries has been placed in the Catawba County Justice Center under a $375,000 secure bond, according to police.
Trevino is also being held at Catawba County Justice Center without bond.
