The College Football Playoff semifinals begin on Thursday evening, with the inaugural 12-team field whittled down to just four contenders.
On Thursday, No. 6 Penn State and No. 7 Notre Dame square off at the Orange Bowl. Both teams relied on suffocating defense and strong rushing outfits to dispatch the higher seed in their respective quarterfinal matchups.

Then, on Friday, blue bloods collide as No. 5 Texas battles No. 8 Ohio State at the Cotton Bowl. The Buckeyes looked downright dominant in the Rose Bowl, while the Longhorns needed an overtime comeback to squeak past Arizona State in the Peach Bowl.
