As we get closer and closer to the end of the College Football Playoffs and the conclusion of NCAA bowl season, the frequency of games has dropped off, with the teams remaining getting some much-needed rest ahead of their decisive matchups.
As a result, there’s no NCAA football on January 8 as the players continue with their preparations for the upcoming CFP semi-finals. The good news, though, is that we don’t have to wait long for the action to get back underway…
Bowl season gets back underway on Thursday, January 9, with the Penn State Nittany Lions against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Orange Bowl.

This year, among the many changes to the format, the Orange Bowl will double up as the first semi-final of the 2024-25 College Football Playoff tournament.
The game will mark the 20th meeting between the two sides, who have a record ahead of time of 9-9-1. It was back at the 1976 Gator Bowl when the two sides last met in the College Bowl, and on that occasion it was the Fighting Irish who walked away with a 20-9 win. As for the last time they faced off against each other, that was in 2007, when the Nittany Lions fought to a 31-10 win.
Held at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida, Thursday’s Orange Bowl is scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET/4:30 p.m. PT.
