Chile were comfortable winners over Brazil in Santiago on Sunday. Los Cóndores won the Rugby World Cup 2027 Qualifier 36-10. Chile scored five of the six tries of the match with Nicolás Garafulic grabbing a double. Brazil’s one try came with the match approaching its conclusion.
Nicolás Garafulic continued his strong 2024 for Los Cóndores. As was the case against Hong Kong in July, Garafullic scored two tries. His first score saw him diving over just inside the left corner flag. It was a try Chile were made had to work for as Brazil’s defense held-up Chile inside the try zone on two occasions in the first-half.
Brazil did not often threaten inside the Chilean 22. When a scoring opportunity presented itself, Lucas Tranquez landed a long-range penalty. The 33rd minute penalty looked like making it a 5-3 half-time scoring; however, Endy Willian Pinheiro was yellow carded for cynical play. Brazil paid the ultimate price as Martín Sigren scored after the half-time hooter.
The loss of Pinheiro was felt into the second half. Garafulic score his second try before Os Tupis were back to 14-men. It put Chile 19-3 ahead after 43 minutes. Videla extended the lead for Chile with a penalty.
There had been tension throughout the match. It boiled over in the 52nd minute. A dangerous tackle from João Marino on Javier Eissmann was followed by foul play. Marino was yellow carded of the tackle, Eisssmann for retaliation and Rafael Teixeira for getting involved.
Before the two returned, Brazil lot Ariel Rodrigues to a red card. The winger was sent off for stamping on Matías Dittus on the floor. Rodrigues now faces the probable scenario of a lengthily ban.
Dittus, who lost his father last week, was the next to score. The prop ran in a try from an overlap. Ernesto Tchimino added another four minutes after Dittus. Brazil responded through Tranquez for a final score of 36-10 to Chile.
Chile and Brazil will meet again in 2025. They are to play home-and-away in Rugby World Cup 2027 Qualifiers. The results from the 2024 matches mean Brazil will host game one while Brazil will travel to Chile for game two.
The series is a Semi Final. The other will be contested between Uruguay and either Colombia or Paraguay. Colombia face Paraguay next weekend. The South American Champion will qualify for Rugby World Cup 2027 a South America 1. That side will join Argentina in Australia 2027.
The South American runner-up will face the fourth placed side from the 2025 Pacific Nations Cup. The tournament will consist of Canada, USA, Samoa and Tonga. In other word, three will book spots at the World Cup and the bottom side will face South America 2.
The losing team of South American 2 vs Pacific Nations Cup 4 will enter repechage with a shot at claiming the 24th, and final, place at Rugby World Cup 2027. The third place side from South America will all be involved in the repechage tournament as will Europe 5 and the winner of Africa 2 vs Asia 2.
