It has been over 16 years since Super Bowl 42, and it's still considered by many as the game in which one of the greatest moments in football history took place. Among them is no other than Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who said that Eli Manning and the New York Giants stunning Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Glendale back in 2008 via a 17-14 score is, for him, the greatest moment in the history of football.
“I don't want to start taking shots. And the one they lost with the Giants when he [David Tyree)] caught the ball in the helmet,” Mahomes said in a recent appearance on Logan Paul's Impaulsive podcast.
“Just because that Giants team was like barely made the playoffs and then they make a run and there's huge underdogs and they end up beating probably the best even though that they didn't win the Super Bowl is probably the best football team of all time and that Patriots team that ends up losing that Super Bowl,” the Chiefs signal-caller added.
But Mahomes also seemed to have Tom Brady leading the Patriots to an incredible comeback from 25 points down in Super Bowl 51 in Houston against Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons is a close second on his list.
“So that would that [Super Bowl 42] or when Tom [Brady] brought them back from 28-3 that those two probably the best thing I can think of.”
Without a doubt, the Giants' comeback win against the Patriots is one for the books. New York defied everyone's expectations. The Patriots entered that game undefeated, beating each opponent that challenged them in the regular season and in the postseason — up until they shared the field with the Giants, who only went just 10-6 in the 2007 regular season. Mahomes was still just 12 years old at that time, but seeing the supposedly indestructible Patriots squad fell prey to the Giants, thanks in large part to that miracle helmet catch by wide receiver David Tyree that helped set up the game-winning score by wideout Plaxico Burress surely made an impression on him.
Several years later, Mahomes would find his way into the NFL and start a career that should also go down as one of the greatest ever. The scary part for Chiefs rivals is that Mahomes seems to be far from done despite winning already three Super Bowls, including a pair in the last two NFL seasons. Since entering the league in 2017 as the 10th pick in the first round of that year's NFL Draft by the Chiefs, Mahomes has done nothing but lead Kansas City to success.
Still just 28 years old, Mahomes has his place in Canton virtually secured. On top of his three Super Bowl rings, the former Texas Tech Red Raiders star QB has three Super Bowl Most Valuable Player awards, two NFL MVPs, and six Pro Bowl selections plus two First-Team All-Pro nods under his belt.
Patrick Mahomes can add to his ever-expanding list of achievements in the NFL in the 2024 NFL season when the Chiefs look to become the first team in history to win three Super Bowls in a row.
In the 2023 NFL season, Mahomes passed for 4,183 yards and 27 touchdowns with 14 interceptions on 67.2 percent completion rate.
