HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – Curtis Cherebin is set to usher in a new era of high school football in the Shenandoah Valley.
Cherebin was appointed the first varsity football coach for Rocktown High School on March 21. The school is set to open this August.
“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said Cherebin. “I’m just so honored and blessed that the people of Harrisonburg, panelist, chose me and given me this opportunity to lead the young people of this community in a new school.”
Cherebin was previously an assistant coach on Kyle Gillenwater’s staff at Harrisonburg High School while also serving as head coach of the JV football program. Before coming to Harrisonburg, Cherebin was coaching at Charlottesville High School. The 2024 season will mark Cherebin’s 11th season coaching.
“The relationships I was able to cultivate in the school building with kids is definitely going to help,” said Cherebin. “As we split schools, we’re both going to be battling a numbers situation. Being able to have some relationships already set with some students and having some new kids that are ready to join up is going to be big parts of us having a successful program and successful school.”
Cherebin says he’s working on completing his coaching staff, which he hopes to have finalized in the near future.
