The Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Sports, Hon. Muhammed Buba Jajere, has charged the newly appointed coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Sekou Chelle, to use only the best players to prosecute the remaining 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.
The former coach of Mali was unveiled yesterday in Abuja with a charge to qualify the three-time African champions for the next mundial to be staged in the USA, Canada and Mexico in 2026.
At the moment, the Super Eagles are second from bottom in Group D of the qualifiers with only three points from four matches.
Surprisingly, Rwanda, South Africa and Benin Republic are leading the table with seven points each.
Therefore, NFF’s decision to appoint Chelle whose profile does not inspire much confidence came as a surprise to many football stakeholders.
However, Hon. Jajere who represents Fika/Fune Federal Constituency of Yobe State is still optimistic that with the right team selection and the necessary support, the Franco-Malian tactician will succeed with the Super Eagles.
“Without a doubt, the task before the new coach is not an easy one but he can succeed if he makes use of the right players in the remaining World Cup qualifiers.
“Although his technical expertise matters, the players must show more commitment and dedication to the national assignment.
“Therefore, I urge the coach to select his players on merit while providing a level playing field for everyone. Only serious minded and patriotic players should be invited.
“The Super Eagles are in a tight corner but it is not too late for them to qualify for the 2026 World Cup,” said Hon. Jajere.
