BYU Football Unveils 1996 Throwback Uniforms – Vanquish The Foe

Filed under:
As part of BYU’s celebration of 100 years of football, the team revealed a throwback uniform to be donned when they host Kansas State this September.
BYU is set to begin their second season in the Big 12 this fall. What was missing in their first season was a matchup against Kansas State, which brings some nostalgia to Cougar fans.
The last time the Cougars and Wildcats met up on the gridiron was in the 1997 Cotton Bowl, following BYU’s epic 1996 campaign. BYU finished that season 13-1 before defeating Kansas State 19-15 to earn their 14th win and finish the season No. 5 in the AP poll.
That is largely considered BYU’s best season aside from their undefeated, national-title-winning squad of 1984. They ended the season 14-1, with wins over Texas A&M, Utah, Wyoming (WAC Title Game), and eventually, Kansas State.
Steve Sarkisian quarterbacked the only BYU team to reach 14 wins in program history. LaVell Edwards’ squad was the first college program to win 14 games since 1903.
To celebrate not only 100 years of BYU football, but the 1996 season that ended with that Cotton Bowl win, BYU will don these throwback uniforms against Kansas State on September 21.

The uniforms feature the old-school block Y logo on the shoulders with black piping along the numbers, shoulder stripes, and helmet stripes.
BYU last wore this type of uniform in 1998, before moving to the navy and tan era in 1999.
While these colors and font certainly call BYU fans back to 1996, these were not the uniforms the Cougars donned against the Wildcats on January 1, 1997. During the 1996 season, BYU wore this specific all-white look against Washington, which ended up being their only loss of the season. They fell to the Huskies 29-17 in Seattle.
BYU fans have long pined for the Cougars to don a mid-1990s style throwback, including the block Y logo and black accents. Now, the Cougars will don these uniforms once again in September.
BYU continues to evolve their uniforms. They revealed the royal and navy helmets ahead of the 2021 season. They also donned gradient black uniforms which also included a Sailor Coug logo for the New Mexico Bowl in 2022.
Now, they add these beautiful throwback threads into the mix. Fans are asked to wear white for the game as well, to add to the “white out” factor. The team also announced they will honor that 1996 team that weekend against Kansas State as well.
