Marta, Brazil’s all-time leading goal scorer in men’s or women’s soccer, will retire from international play this year, she announced Thursday.
“This is my last year, and I can already confirm it here,” the 38-year-old international soccer star told CNN Brasil. “There is a moment when we have to understand that the time has come.”
Marta, who also plays for the Orlando Pride of the National Women’s Soccer League, said she will play for the Brazilian national team one final time if selected for the roster at this year’s Paris Olympics.
“If I go to the Olympics, I’ll enjoy every moment because, regardless of whether I go to the Olympics or not, this is my last year with the national team,” she said. “There is no longer Marta in the national team as an athlete from 2025 onwards.”
Marta, with 115 career goals, has played in six World Cup tournaments and five Olympics games for Team Brazil. She led Brazil to the 2004 Olympics gold medal game, where the team lost to USA; the 2007 Women’s World Cup final, where Brazil lost to Germany; and the 2008 Olympics gold medal game, where Brazil again lost to USA. In 2019, Marta became the first player in history to score at five World Cups – men’s or women’s – and she holds the all-time record for World Cup goals with 17.
In addition, Marta has been named the FIFA Player of the Year six times – including five straight years from 2006 to 2010. No other women’s player has won the award more than three times.
