Grade 1-winning millionaire Johannes will have time off after coming out of his win in the Grade 2 San Gabriel Stakes with bone bruising.
Camilla Yakteen, an on-air reporter for Santa Anita who is also the wife of Johannes’s trainer Tim Yakteen, posted Friday on X that Johannes came out of his Dec. 26 race with a “mild case of bone bruising.” Yakteen did not state a timeline for a return but said he will get the “necessary time off to fully recover” before racing again.


Coming out of the San Gabriel Stakes, Johannes developed a mild case of bone bruising. As always, Tim and the owners, Debby and Joe McCloskey, will put Johannes first and give him the necessary time off to fully recover before resuming his 2025 campaign. @santaanitapark
A 5-year-old intact son of Nyquist, Johannes was one of the invitees to the Pegasus World Cup Turf (G1) on Jan. 25 and was expected to be near the top of the market. Horse Racing Nation‘s Ed DeRosa tabbed Johannes as a 2-1 favorite in his fair odds for the race. He also was a 2-1 favorite for the Pegasus World Cup Turf in European markets, according to U.K.-based Oddschecker.
Johannes is one of the Eclipse Award finalists for champion turf horse of 2024. A two-time stakes winner at age 3 in 2023, he broke through at the graded level last year with wins in the American (G3), Shoemaker Mile (G1), Eddie Read (G2), City of Hope Mile (G2) and San Gabriel. His only defeat in 2024 came in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, where he missed by three quarters of a length to More Than Looks. Johannes is 13: 8-1-1 with $1,153,859 in career earnings.
