LAKE PLACID — The Lake Placid girls soccer team claimed a 4-1 victory over Saranac Lake Tuesday on the Blue Bombers’ home field to wrap up the regular season.
Kendra Levitt scored twice for the Blue Bombers, while Harper Strack and Anisa Cecunjanin each added a goal. Ella Moodey and Eliza Fitzsimmons chipped in with an assist. The Red Storm’s Mar Carmona Guarido scored her team’s only goal of the contest.
Levitt connected on Lake Placid’s first two goals, the first around the halfway point in the opening half and the other early in the second.
“Her goal was a great volley that a lot of people would struggle with in high school and it was her non-dominant foot — her left foot — that she’s been working on,” Blue Bombers head coach Heather Brewer said. “Her second goal, she had to fight for. Her will to get those goals today was definitely evident.”
With her two tallies, Levitt now has 10 goals on the season, which leads Lake Placid.
“(When) they got their first goal and we were kind of like ‘What just happened?’” Red Storm head coach Jason Wamsganz said. “Our aggression kind of backed off. We were able to pick it up again, but it was too late. Once they scored that second goal, I feel like we didn’t respond. I think we had an opportunity to respond after we scored our first goal and come back and try to get a second one. We just didn’t.”
While trailing 2-0, Carmona Guarido sent a shot over the head of Lake Placid’s goalie Emma Clark. However, Saranac Lake was never able to score again.
The Blue Bombers tacked on two more goals from Strack and Cecunjanin to close out the game.
“I think we talked about some thing, and worked on some things in practice and didn’t transition it to the game tonight, unfortunately,” Wamsganz said.
The Red Storm did come out hot in the early goings, while putting pressure on the Lake Placid defense; however, Clark turned away numerous shots, including the first half when she recorded back-to-back key saves to prevent Saranac Lake from scoring.
“We were doing a little bit of ball watching in the first half, but in the second half we put it together and had some good finishes too,” Brewer said. “The game was closer than the score. Saranac Lake had some opportunities that Emma, our goalie, just had some really good saves on.”
Clark finished with fives saves, while Emma Akey had three stops for the Red Storm.
With the win, the Blue Bombers, which have been on fire recently, improve to 6-7-2. The team is unbeaten in its last four games — three wins and a tie. A big reason for the success has come from its offensive production as the team has scored 13 goals during that stretch.
“From the beginning of the season, we had a lot of trouble scoring, and in the middle, we had a drought,” Brewer said. “It was nice to see a continuation of scoring each game.”
On the other side, the Red Storm have dropped four straight contests, while falling to 6-8-1. While Wamsganz said the team is just coming back from some injuries and illnesses, they aren’t where they need to be right now.
“It’s not where you want to be at all, with playoffs lurking around the corner,” he said. “Whether its Northeastern Clinton or Saranac, it’s going to get a lot harder.”
The Red Storm girls will play in the Section VII, Class B tournament, while the Blue Bombers will compete in Section VII, Class D. Their opponents are yet to be determined.
