The Black Stars, Ghana’s senior men’s national football team, have slipped three places in the latest FIFA Men’s World Ranking, released on Thursday (24 October).
Once ranked among Africa’s elite, Ghana now finds itself in 73rd place globally, following a lacklustre performance in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
October proved challenging for the Black Stars, with a draw and a defeat to Sudan contributing to their decline.
Sudan, by contrast, made a significant leap, jumping ten places from 120th to 110th. This double result highlights Ghana’s current struggles as they grapple with a prolonged period of inconsistency despite numerous managerial changes.
While the Black Stars’ global ranking has dipped, they remain 14th in Africa, trailing behind South Africa, Burkina Faso, and Cabo Verde, who occupy 11th, 12th, and 13th positions, respectively.
This continued slide marks a stark contrast to Ghana’s standing in October 2015, when they held 25th place globally.
Morocco continues to dominate African football, maintaining its position as the continent’s top team. The Atlas Lions also moved up one place to 13th globally.
Senegal and Egypt, ranked second and third in Africa, have also improved their world rankings, now sitting at 20th and 30th, respectively.
Sudan, alongside Comoros, emerged as the biggest winners in this round of rankings. Comoros’ victory and draw against Tunisia in the AFCON qualifiers helped them climb from 118th to 108th.
Meanwhile, Tunisia endured the steepest decline on the continent, falling from 36th to 47th in the world. Once fourth in Africa, Tunisia now ranks seventh.
Ghana’s continued decline is a reminder of the challenges facing the national team as they strive to regain their former glory on the international stage.
